Well since the offer letter was given to me, I can let the cat out of the bag, I'm moving with work to Iselin, NJ. Current plan is to get a condo/apartment near there as a a pied a terre. However, Karen and I want to keep our fleet of cars and I'm not a stickler for paying NJ taxes. As such, we're looking for a more rural spot in Eastern PA, let's say within 100 miles of NYC that we could have our main house and a 4-6 car stable. Not looking at over the top extravagance, just a nice 3-4 bedroom house with a "barn". What cities should I be looking in? Note: I am frugal (read: cheap bastard).

    Thanks,
    Erik

Welcome to the area cheap bastard -- oh sorry Erik!!

My girlfriend's family lives in eastern PA about 20 miles north of Philly. Really nice area. I'd look in and around the New Hope/Ivyland area. Some nice homes there.

Good luck with the move and enjoy NJ!!

What's your budget? I am in Central NJ, you can get some pretty good deals and it's a great area.

Would like to stay under 400k. NJ taxes are what I am not keen about.

I'm not terribly familiar with the area, but Milford, Pennsylvania is just on the border of New Jersey and New York. I've been there. It's in the beautiful Pocono Mountains area -- very peaceful with plenty of space but not exactly the middle of nowhere as there are some towns with activity nearby.

Incidentally, Jim McGee is there, and he is a renown Ferrari repair specialist (Pocono Sportscar).

For 400k and avoiding NJ taxes, then PA is the way to go. Bucks County is quite nice and is within the 100 mile NY limit.

    Good luck!

But the commute from Pa to NYC across Rt 80 can be brutal. There always seems to be an accident shutting down 1 or multiple lanes.

    Clyde,

Job is not in the city, but in Iselin, NJ. 2 miles from where the parkway and the turnpike cross. If I can get something semi-rural within 1.25 hours of there, I'd be willing to look anywhere. Likely I will need to cross the river into PA to get what I'm looking for. But that said, I plan on giving the next garage the same Ferrari treatment that I gave this one, likely taking it to the next level and will be happy to host BBQ weekends as a starting point for drives. Some great roads in that part of the world...

    Cheers,
    Erik

It's not what it used to be, real estate is still on the cheap, but the stress and traffic are not worth it. Eastern PA is over-developed, small county roads with few highways, shopping/getting anything accomplished on the weekends is a disaster. I-80, I-78 and I-280 are insane during morning rush, the highways are always under construction and the traffic from all the Jersey transplants is endless. Iselin is Middlesex County, you can find cheap towns with decent neighborhoods in the area, taxes suck but it's NJ; everything is at your fingertips/driving distance

welcome to the garden state brotha

Any recommendations? Want to be able to build something like this in the back yard (need a bit of space, don't want to spend a fortune).
