I am looking at taking a job that will require me to move to the Raleigh/Durham area. I will be working mostly from home, but will also be working closely with the universities in the area (thus the need to move).

That said, what are the best neighborhoods?

I am looking for good public schools, low crime and homes can be purchased for about $220k or less.

Anyone here have any insight on where I should start my search. I can really live anywhere within a reasonable driving distance of Raleigh/Durham.

    Thanks.

You will LOVE NC, especially coming from OK. Not to knock OK (I am a transplant from NY), but this state has it all (well mostly!) There are many really nice neighborhoods in the triangle area. Cary is probably the most completely upscale. As in most cities, Raleigh has its very nice areas, and not so nice areas. Naturally, you'll need to do a realtor.com search for homes which suit your needs. Cary and the nice areas of Raleigh have somewhat higher home prices. If you are ok with getting out to the fringe a bit, your money will go a long way. Commuting is generally easy in the area. Raleigh is a great city in which to live. There's a lot to do and a fair amount of cultural activities. The beaches of NC are absolutely gorgeous! The water hits 85 degrees in late June/early July! Welcome and good luck!
BTW, do you have an F-car?

For good schools and in the range, I would look at north Ral between 440 and 540. Best local public schools in that area are called Millbrook, and you should be able to find a 4 bed room in a decent area at that cost point. Let me know if and when you start to come down to look and either we can hook up or I can recommend the realtor I use.

I am weighing options, but will make a final decision in a month or less. I have always been a big Duke fan (dangerous thing to admit in this area). My dream as a kid was to play for soccer for Duke.

As for Ferrari ownership, if 1:18 models count, then yes. But not 1:1's yet.

I am excited about the opportunity in the area, but need to make sure I make the smart choice for my family. But, wanted to start collecting info, so that when I do make the decision I can make my move quickly.

The following may help put the area in perspective :) Has been circulating the Net for quite a while so you may have seen it already.

Mattel recently announced the release of limited-edition Barbie Dolls for The Triangle market:

    " Cary Barbie"
This princess Barbie is sold only on the square in Cary . She comes with an
assortment of Kate Spade Handbags, a Lexus SUV, a long-haired foreign dog named Honey
and a cookie-cutter house. Available with or without tummy tuck and face
lift. Workaholic Ken sold only in conjunction with the augmented version.

    "Holly Springs/Apex Barbie"
The modern day homemaker Barbie is available with Ford Wind star Minivan
and matching gym outfit. She gets lost easily and has no full-time occupation.
Traffic jamming cell phone sold separately.

    " South Raleigh Barbie"
This recently paroled Barbie comes with a 9mm handgun, a Ray Lewis knife,a
Chevy with dark tinted windows, and a Meth Lab Kit. This model is only
available after dark and must be paid for in cash (preferably small, untraceable
bills) ..unless you are a cop, then we don't know what you are talking about.

    "North Raleigh/Wake Forest Barbie"
This Barbie comes with comes with a set of outfits for the downtown club environment as well as for volunteering at kids soccer games, swim team events, and school. Spends her days watching over the kids at the neighborhood pool while chatting things up with the other Moms. Comes with Hummer H2 for those quick trips to hoard milk and bread at the mere hint of a winter snow or ice storm.

    "Clayton Barbie"
This pale model comes dressed in her own Wrangler jeans two sizes too
small, a NASCAR t-shirt and tweety bird tattoo on her shoulder. She has a six-pack of Bud
light and a Hank Williams Jr. CD set. She can spit over 5 feet and kick mullet-haired Ken's
butt when she is drunk. Purchase her pickup truck separately and get a confederate flag
    bumper sticker absolutely free.

    "Garner Barbie"
This tobacco-chewing, brassy-haired Barbie has a pair of her own
high-heeled sandals with one broken heel from the time she chased beer-gutted Ken out of Clayton
Barbie's house. Her ensemble includes low-rise acid-washed jeans, fake fingernails, and a
see-through halter-top. Also available with a mobile home.

    " Chapel Hill Barbie"
This doll is made of actual tofu. She has long straight brown hair,
arch-less feet, hairy armpits, no makeup and Birkenstocks with white socks. She prefers that you call her
Willow . She does not want or need a Ken doll, but if you purchase two Chapel Hill Barbie's and the optional Subaru wagon, you get a rainbow flag bumper sticker for free.

Living smack dab in the middle of Clayton and Garner, I resemble that remark... ;)

Actually, you can get a great house with land out here a lot cheaper than some of the places listed. Traffic can be a little rough if you are headed into the "big city" at certain times of the day, and I do hate to admit it, but Johnston County does have the repuation for being a little redneck because it is... But then again, anywhere in rural NC is like that, we are just so close to anywhere in Raleigh that it's a great place to live. Don't forget Knightdale, or even Wendell or Zebulon if you like a quiet bedroom community.

If you do not drive every day than look to Moore county. It is an hour from chapel Hill and only fifteen minutes longer to downtown Durham or Raleigh. You can live in horse country and enjoy a more relaxed environment. There are good private and not so bad public schools.
It is still "GOD"S" country and not a NC version of LA.
That is my 2 cents having been in NC for 43 years and starting in the Research Triangle, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill environment for the first 17 years.

Yeah, probably isn't going to happen. I have been a Duke fan since I was 7-8. Who knows how a kid that lives half way across the country gets turned on to Duke Soccer? All I know it that my heart wouldn't let me do it.

Awesome! :) Chapel Hill Barbie sounds like Durham Barbie. Only Durham Barbie drives a new Suburban with a "Coexist" bumper sticker!

    Peter,

You must be referring to "Escape from Durham Barbie". The Suburban was armor plated and had runflats so she could make it out of Durham downtown.

Well, it looks like I am not going to be headed out that way after all. I ended up getting a great offer locally. My wife loves it here, so we are staying on Oklahoma.

However, one of these days I would love to head back east.
