That's pretty poor fuel economy, particularly when my 12-cylinder, carbed Boxer get's about 8+ mpg in the city...and about 12 mpg on the highway, driven in a rather spirited manor...

Yep. That and each time the OP moves his throttle upand down in that accel/decel driving an extra squirt of gas goes down each of his eight throats. Really does add up.

Still, that sounds very heavy consumption. Time to check out fuel lines and carbs, imho.

You said it was modified, so I assume the jetting was also altered to deliver more fuel. You might want to have the carbs set up again using a CO meter so they can be leaned out if running too rich. The car will likely run hotter than now with the leaned mixture, so if your cooling system isn't perfect that may be the next thing that requires attention.

328 has no mods and gets higher than 20 on highway, closer to 25. Best MPG of any cars we have!

I get about 20mpg on the highway.

If I enjoy myself with the throttle (because I love the sound of it breathing through those twin Weber carbs) it drops to about 15 or 16 mpg.

These are imperial gallons, so I guess the US equivalent would be of the order of 17mpg (highway) and 13mpg (when having some fun).

I watch my 86' 328 (Euro) gas usage like a hawk to see if I am having any engine issues. Currently she stands at the following:

    Highway: 23 to 25
City: 15 to 16 (depends on how many times I push her hard)

My trip to the beach usually gives me about 24mpg at 75mph.

You guys are assuming the mileage readout on the odometer is correct... My speedo reads significantly low, which should mean the odometer reads low too. That combination would mean I actually get better mileage than calculated using the odometer.

I am getting 21 on the highway. 14-16 in SPIRITED city driving.

I find my car very comfortable and could drive it 10 hours + at a stretch without any discomfort. And I am 6' tall.

I checked my ODO/speedo against the GPS. It's actually dead nuts accurate -- but I do not have the stock tire sizes on the car.

I'm getting around 230miles out of a fillup. The Tank gauge is dancing hiphop after half!
Going in the CA hills average is about 10mpg. I guess if we had better quality Gas (94ROZ or 98ROZ) most the Cars would get substantial better mileage and less gunk in the engine too.

    Never follow.........

22mph on a 2000 mile road trip calculated on GPS miles and petrol receipts for a '76 308 GTB at 80-100mph for most of the motorway journey. Main jets 140's. Best to check the tuning of your car! I discovered a blockage in the air cleaner on my GT4 which when removed, nearly doubled the mpg.

I get the same with my 77. I think all of the carb cars must be getting this. I would find it hard to belive anyone getting over 20 unless they are coasting all of the time. Maybe the FI cars are better but high rpm's seem to eat fuel.

I think the main thing with the carb cars is accelleration and the large accell pump.
If you keep the throttle steady I think you can get in the high teens or nudge 20, but I agree it would be tough to get above 20.

Around 10 in the city, and that includes quite a bit of pedal-to-the metal on NW Highway and Central.

    No highway trips yet.

As some have eluded, how a person drives has just as much to do with fuel economy as the engine itself. If you drive like some people, they accelerate a bit then back off and slow down, then accelerate again. No matter how gently you do this it will destroy good fuel economy. Keeping your foot imobilised on the throttle will gain the most mpg's. Let it run away a bit down hills, let it slow going up, youll see decent fuel economy. Old Fiats used to have hand throttles like an airplane, you could push it in to set the engine power then turn it to the right to lock it. But you know us free and brave Americans, we banned that crazy idea. Thats why a person who knows how to drive can always beat a cruise control. I think it was engineered by those same goofy drivers who speed up and slow down.

I never seen mileage under 20, average about 22, peak was 27 but I thought it was a mistake. Reading some others here maybe it wasnt? And I dont drive slow either.

Since I first started driving I have always checked my cars odometer on mile markers and found the error factor. And I always use the error factor when calculating fuel economy.

My 22mpg may have been helped by different ignition packs on the car giving a bigger spark on bigger gaps. 10% better maybe? Will check my adding up again just to make sure. But round town half that figure.

I was running points all the driving I did. If they are set up properly there is really no difference.

Much of my driving is on the highway, '89 model 328. Obviously fuel injected.

I am consistently using 10L/100km, or just over 28 mpg IMPERIAL gallon, or 22.6 mpg US.

Last month I fueled up after just over 620km /385 miles from one tank and put in 62L. I think that is ~17 US gallons.

I've had the car 3.5 years and driven ~30,000 miles in that time, nearly doubling its total mileage from nearly 30,000 to nearly 60,000 miles. The car has been running better the longer I own it and the more I drive it.

Of course, spirited driving and track driving use more fuel, but I don't measure then. When I fuel up now I know how much fuel I will need, the distance travelled in km divided by 10 gives me litres.

    Enjoy. Pete
