Whoa...come again??? You got to drive this monster?? Yea, I'm just a little jealous. BUT!...that is totally awesome that he let you. That takes alot of trust and generousity. I'd love to meet him....not because of his car....but because of the quality of character you say he has. Anyone with a love for these cars, and a willingness to share that love and passion with others, is a rare find in my book. Mind you, they all seem to congregate in and around F-Chat . That's really cool.
Somewhere back in the archives is the thread about my getting to drive this car. Maybe if you click on my name and view my public image and search for threads started by me you can find it. It know it is there somewhere. It was a ball and he is very genuine. I have known him for about 16 years now and have some good memories. I found a few pictures of it along with some pictures of my old motorcycle racing days and drag racing cars in the threads started section.......... When Road and Track tested his car back in 1997 they scraped his "God is Awesome" sticker off the side windows, wore out his clutch and his tires and returned the car to him that way. They said they could not leave the sticker on the window because that could be taken the wrong way and someone might believe that they supported his beliefs. He told them that that would be the last time they could test one of his cars. They finally paid for tires but would not replace the clutch they burned up during the test sessions. If you get a chance to meet him, do it, you will come away pleased for the opportunity........
I remember reading about his cummute from his home in Cologne to Frankfurt in Car and Driver and thinking, how lucky is that guy to drive that car everyday at 200 mph! Do you remember what his average speed was?
They did leave the fish symbol on the back of the car as you can see from my first photo. I don't think I knew what it meant back then though. Here are two photos I think you posted here before from your time with the car too. I had them handy... If anyone wants the link to the photos that were originally posted on AutomotiveForums.com that sparked the thread here, you can find them at this link: http://www.internetpiratesguild.com/exotics/ That isn't my host, so I cannot guarantee how long they will last. There are some great shots of his Enzo as well, so something for everyone. >8^) ER Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Those photos are really incredible and I too would love to see more of them when you have the time, and of course at a size as large as you are willing to share. Those are definitely the best shots of that lineup to 'sneak' out of the MTC yet. I know that the green road car is 'XP5', and the LM is 'XP1 LM', but would you have any way of confirming if the #59 LeMans winner in the pictures is truly #01R. The Sultan of Brunei has a GTR that appears to be #01R as well, but the rumor is that McLaren Cars built him a replica using GTR #09R instead of selling the original. I assume the reverse could be true too - that they sold the original to him and bulit themselves a replica. Anyway, for a McLaren nut like myself, it is an interesting bit of trivia that that remains unanswered. If you can help us answer that one I would truly appreciate it. >8^) ER
maybe its just common knowledge, but what does this Mr. Beal do for a living? I can't seem to place his name anywhere edit// not a stalker, just curious what he does to afford an enzo and a mclaren and not mind putting stickers and emblems on them
A lot of wealthy Texans have made their money in oil, and I believe that is also the case with Mr. Beal. >8^) ER
Why paint a million $ car to the color on car with a lesser MSRP? I think he should repaint his Enzo to the same color as his F1 Go ahead, flame me (flame suit on)
Hey Peter Please tell me three things, 1) that the mclaren f1 gt was there that day, 2) That you took some pictures of it, and 3)That you will post them for us to appreciate! heres hoping ,Cheers Alan W.
wow, lucky man!! can you tell me if this pic also comes out of mclaren HQ? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
In answer to some of the questions ;-) (Audiguy) Its possible that the sat was before my time-don't ever remember having a call about it (maybe it never went wrong!) I know the tool they use to diagnos (spelling!) is run on a DOS/Win 3.11 platform and is very old now and can only be used on certain laptops. The "trainer" of the F1 certainly has trained people from around the world, so likely that you friends mechanic know's the guy I know. (Peloton25) In answer to the LeMans car, I will have to get back to you on that. I honestly don't know. (alan) The only F1's were those ones that day. Apart from the "proper" Formula One cars. (eurperules)-Yes the pictures are from one of the buildings where the F1's are serviced.
thats a shame there just arent many good photos of the f1 gt out there, i was hoping you might have some , but never mind, great shots any way cant wait to see more!
To add my .02¢ to this info: I don't believe that McLaren have upgraded the on-board diagnostics to work directly via satellite. The original system is shown in the photo below - basically a modem that plugs into a port on the side of the car behind the left luggage compartment door - that allows the technicians to troubleshoot a car anywhere in the world over a landline telephone. I suspect they may have made changes to allow the modem to work with cellular telephone, which would then bring satellites in to play, but I don't believe the cars will have been upgraded with any kind of on-board satellite link for diagnostic purposes. There are several F1s which have had a navigation system fitted at the customer's request though, and those F1s would obviously have a way to recieve satellite transmissions, but I don't think that is a 2-way system and I doubt it is also used for this purpose. I would appreciate any efforts you can make to find the answer. I have a feeling it will be one of those things that remains a mystery. There is only one photo that has snuck out of Brunei of the Sultan's (presumed) #59 replica, but getting info or more photos from there would surely prove impossible. It's rare someone asks about the F1 GT. Some love it and some hate it, but most don't realize that it ever existed. Here's one photo of it that was taken as a screenshot from "Martin Brundle's 'Supercars'" video. I've shared it as a link so it won't need to be downsized. At the bottom are a few less common photos of the GT as well. These shots are all of '56XPGT', the F1 GT prototype. There were also two customer GTs produced - one in burgundy '58F1GT' and one in black '54F1GT'. F1 GT at McLaren Technology Center To be slightly more accurate, the photos you took were at the new facility known as the McLaren Technology Center (as I'm sure you know). The photo that he has posted came from the old facility on Albert Drive that was the previous headquarters of McLaren Cars. >8^) ER Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, that is my son in the right hand seat waving at the camera. Those shots were taken in front of a friends house in Arlington, Texas. I was in the drivers seat and my wife was in the other side seat. Thanks for reposting the photos.......:>) The fish symbol was a metal bolt-on that they attempted to take off but would have had to take the rear grillework out to do it and decided to leave there. They did however, scrape off the "God is Awesome" decals from both side windows. BTW, the man on the left in the top photo in the floppy hat is Mr. Beal himself..........
Check out BTA Oil Producers in MIdland, Texas. That should answer your questions. The company was begun by his dad. Carty has always been very involved in the day to day operation of it and was not given anything on a silver platter when his dad passed away. He had already assumed the reins of the company before then...... You might also go to: www.Capitol.state.tx.us./tlo/79Rbilltext/HR00731F.HTM Hmmm, not working. Do a Google search on Carlton Beal Jr and you will get a whole list of things including the one above. It is a house bill signed by Speaker of the HOuse, Tom Craddick recognizing Carty and his wife Lynda on their 40th wedding anniversary. It gives a little history on the two of them.
i have 2 that come from the Matsuda collection in Japan i believe. if i'm not mistaken, that's 58 F1 GT. an F1 LM is sitting next to it. also have some more of the one peloton (56 XP GT...?) posted. i believe that s the one prototype that's still in McLaren's collection
Do a Google search for BTA / Midland / Carlton Beal Jr. and you will find a link to a house bill just signed in Texas that recognizes Carty and his wife Lynda for forty years of marriage. In it is the statement that he teaches a community Bible class along with everything else he does. It is an interesting read........
I vaguely remember reading a post with something to that effect, now that you mention it. Hopefully in my journey through the automotive world, I'll have the priviledge of meeting many quality people, as Mr. Beal seems to be. That's horrible about Road & Track. After having just grabbed the most recent one (with the Pagani Roadster, Murci Barchetta, F430 Spider, and Aston Martin Volante), it makes me wonder how they treated these vehicles and their owners. Wow...*shakes head and shudders*....I hope they have increased in integrity over the years.
Here is some more photos of the GT. Also, Peloton25 do you know of a McLaren in Colorado? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mr Beal's F1 has been spotted in Vail on at least two occasions that I have heard of. In fact, I used to have a photo of his F1 taken in Vail but lost it somehow. Other than that, I am not aware of any. >8^) ER
