I agree and know its not just MS who feels so deeply into his car or bat or whatever. I think all elite athletes feel another sense of the action that most of us just don't percieve.
It was just a revelation to me, as an enthusiast and driver to think more on the subtle level. I think my attention has been more focused on the point of action rather that say the following wheels or part of the chasis. Just another nuance to help bring more input.
I do think its this kind of subtle perception that can make someone like MS, or Senna, be able to wring his car out fully yet still be aware of not overdriving the car to the point of failure.
In one of the interviews with Senna he was talking about drving go carts, at like 10 or 12, in the rain and how he was getting passed right and left, even though he was "pretty good in the dry". That was a revelation to him that he remembered all his life and a turning point in his drving skills. I think Senna was the best wet weather driver I have seen. And I remain in awe of all these guys when they are driving close to 200mph in the total wake of water with almost no visibility and just balls out. Truly amazing.

Lauda had a slow leak at Monaco in 1978; came in and changed his rear tire; turns out his tire was only down about 2 PSI but Lauda still detected it, much to his mechanics' amazement...

That's not surprising at all, 2 lbs is HUGE in racing, once they heat up.

Remember when Alboreto came to Ferrari, one of his first assignments was tire testing, so they brought him in, did a big shell-game swap, moving tires every which way, and they put the same ones back on, sent him out, he came back in in two laps and asked 'are you sure you didn't put the same tires back on ?'.

    True story.
