Has anyone used an MSD in the 246 Dino? If so, what model number MSD? The instructions (Web pdf) forbid the use of solid spark plug wires. When ordering factory Dino spark plug wires, what comes in the box - coil wound or solid?

    Thanks for your help.

I've got one that came in my Euro Dino and it is great, doesn't foul plugs and starts every time.

RoloCR and Synchro - great help. Thanks. Are you using Ferrari factory original equipment spark plug wires?????? MSD warns against using solid conductor spark plug cables.

Do you have it mounted in the trunk? MSD warns against mounting in an enclosed space ("...such as a glove box..."). I assume this is a heat build-up issue, and the trunk is a large container, but nonetheless, there is no ventilation.

Finally - Any difficulty with the tachometer???

    Thanks.

i'm pretty sure the car has the original wires, no problem with the tach, i don't remember but i think the tach is mechanical and not electrical, you only get tach issues on DIS systems and a tach adapter will fix it

    it's in the trunk

There is a two part article from Prancing Horse from the late 80"s that details this conversion. I do not believe wires or coils were changed. If you want I can look tonight to see if I can find it and fax it to you.

I remember thinking of doing this when my 72 coupe dinoplex was acting up.

Did it to my Dino and had no problems. There was something in the instructions about disconnecting one set of points but I left both and found no issues. I mounted mine in the trunk next to the Dinoplex so if I ever have a MSD failure all I have to do is reconnect to the Dinoplex and keep rolling.
Main power to the MSD was taken from the main battery cable at the starter.

The Previous Owner had it done by FST in Santa Monica, CA and head mechanic, Claudio, used the MSD coil, standard cavis spark plug wires and Bosch Platinum spark plugs (I think I recall they are W7's, off the top of my head). It is installed in the trunk at the same place where the AEC-103A was mounted. Plugs don't foul after 3000 Miles. Tach works well and I believe it is accurate.

Great help, guys. Thanks. Do you know whether the standard Cavis set is 8.5mm or 8.0 or 7.0mm?

Also - forgive my ignorance - is the 246 V6 an "odd fire" or "even fire"?

    Thanks.

    JCR,

You can use solid core wires if you use resistor plugs. As long as the resistor is in series with the gap, it will supress the noise.
