Since there was recently a thread on how to wire up a new MSD on Boxers I thought I would just mention a few other adjustments that have proved useful on my cars. I'm sure these have been mention before but maybe worth repeating as its a cold winters night outside and I've got a nice bottle of red on the go.

    1. Plugs - I've used an NKG BP6ES with gaps of .0035. I tried gap of .0050 but car stuttered aat higher revs. Just prefer the 6's to the 7's as they don't soot up as much at tickover. 5's are abit to hot. The extra gap is essential to make the most of that bigger spark.

    2. Leads - Existing leads ok but check for green crud in where the leads push on to the distributor cap and where they push onto the plug entenders - otherwise that nice fat spark is lost.

    3. Distributor cap - open this up and check for green crud inside and clean off .

    4. The MSD 7A goes straight on with very little wiring mods (see other recent thread). Mine is connected to the starter for a constant feed rather than the alternator and has worked fine. The 7A does not have a limiter.

    5. Coil - I am currently running the original Marrelli coil but recon a big improvement would be a crane blaster coil with a higher output. I run these on my 308GT4 and the result is good but difficult to strip out the exact improvement.

    6. Carb jets - with the bigger spark jets can go up a couple of sizes giving a noticable thrust improvement. Went from 130 to 160 mains on my GT4 with very noticable performance difference. Can't remember whats in the 512 but they are definately bigger. My 365BB has smaller jets (don't know why ) and this is a winter project to change them.

    Regarding the coil.

When I installed an MSD unit (6AL) on my previous 512BBi, I bought an MSD Blaster 2 coil, spray painted it black (instead of red) and was able to peel off the original chrome/plastic sticker from the Marelli coil and put it on the new coil.

It looked factory "original" when installed.

Good idea about the treating the new coil as it is very visable on a Boxer. I was planning to use a crane one but could use an MSD one.

FYI, I use the MSD Blaster 'High Vibration' coil which is already black...I too removed the MSD sticker and replaced it with a Marelli sticker... http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Coils/Race/8222_-_High_Vibration_Blaster_Coil.aspx

    Good input!

    1. I'm using NGK BPR8ES on a Dino 246GT with a MSD6AL-2 and 0,048 gap, works great. Did some dyno runs and now have 5 PS/10 NM more as a result (which you won't notice in real life). Wouldnt not recommend to go much higher than 0,047-0,048 gap to not stress the distributor and wiring too much.

    2. Avoid carbon fibre cables, if you have broken wire in one of the cables, the MSD just eats them up starting from that point. Helical from MSD or NGK are best choice for an MSD setup.

    5. Use at least a MSD Blaster 2 (#8200), this one has the correct resistance and inductivity to perform well with the MSD CDIs. The BZR205A also works but i would worry about the secondary insulation with a 30 year old coil and the wiring ratio wont give you the optimal performance. The best coil for the MSD 6 series is an e-coil such as the Mallory 30440, which obviously wont look original at all. If you are ok with that, go for this type of coil instead of the Blaster 2.

    6. Exactly, i've changed the jets on the Dino to the next available size with quite a noticable result, and the engine now runs very smooth.

Have you had the problem with your MSD7A where the engine keeps running after the key is switched off?
