Anyone know it? I am finally registering my car in Nev and they go by 10% of NADA value which states $85000 in '78 which I know is wrong, I assume it should be around $40k.
That is not a simple question. Do you include the cost of Federalization? If so, I believe $80-85k is not out of line. Or, are you referring to the cost in lire paid at the factory, converted to dollars at the prevailing exchange rate? Was your car originally sold new in Italy, or somewhere else?
My car was sold new in Germany. What I am looking for is the factory MSRP at FOB Italy, I understand about the DOT conversion costs and so forth I am not looking for that, the NADA book states $85000 for all Boxers 76 up to 84 which is incorrect. The DMV is charging me sales tax on $85000 going off the NADA book for its MSRP guides, in 84 the Boxer could have had a MSRP of $85k but in 78 I would assume around $45k
Hi, Jeff. You may have some difficulty establishing an MSRP for a Belinetta Boxer. They weren't officially imported into the US. It going to be hard to argue something other than the NADA value. For what it's worth, here's a link to MSRP values of other Ferraris: www.ferrariclub.com/msrp Good luck. That's a strange formular that Nevada uses. Do they have any exemptions for classic or collector cars? --Matt
Hi Matt No exemptions, they just go off the MSRP of any vehicle when new then taking off depreciation or 10% of the value, the NADA guide is costing me at least $400 extra in sales tax due to their error on the MSRP stating it was $85k in 78, money I'd rather put in the car vs give to the State.
So I call FNA get bounced around around to their different technical depts and ask their advice, they say try Ferrarichat or FerrarClubofAmerica web sites they have alot of knowledgeable classic owners, well thanks alot FNA, I asked can you check with Ferrari SPA? No sorry can't help you, so helpful as usual. Gave the NADA guys a call again, they will do more research with their older publications on Ferrari and get back to me.
How can there be a US MSRP for a model not sold in the US? Isn't the best you can do the 1978 MSRP from some other market converted to 1978 dollars? Or shouldn't there be some sort of "value" shown on the DOT importation paperwork?
I agree on the MSRP for the US but their must be a mfrs MSRP from Ferrari Spa for Europe or where ever else the car was sold. The paperwork I have has no value on it, it's not complete.
I'd bet my last dollar that there was some sort of tax/fee based on the vehicle value during the importation (but I understand how sometimes things are a little incomplete). I'm wondering now when the whole "standardized" MSRP-thing was started? Personally, I believe it was a brilliant invention by the car dealers to help convince the buyer what a good deal they were getting . Maybe other markets even lagged the US market in adopting an "official" MSRP so the best you will do is getting an original non-US purchaser to confess. Anyone know when MSRPs started being widely adopted/used in the different vehicle markets?
Jeff, I have a 78bb that's been with our family since July 1978, My father paid $71,347 to be exact from the factory and shipped to Manila for $1844.00. The car was imported in the U.S.(San Francisco) back in 85 when I was in college, Car was federalize for $6,526 this figure may cost less since it came with diplomatic papers and had diplomatic plates for 7years. I hope this answers your ?. Randy
Thanks Randy it does, I wouldn't know how I could document it but it seems the NADA$85k is not that far off with federalization costs.
The road test of the 512BB in R&T, March 1978, says that list price for a Boxer in Italy was $38,000, and the price as tested was $85,000 after the certification process. According to the article, this particular car was brought into the US by Werner Schoch and Michael Pokorny, who sent it to Trend Imports for EPA and DOT modifications. The owner of the car was Alan Vieira. I once met a man who told me that he had constructed many of the "cowcatcher" bumpers used on these early federalized Boxers.
