    2001 360 manual transmission.

Out on my leisurely weekend drive and all of a sudden 1st/3rd/6th gears (top of the gate) won't engage (mushy feeling) with no drive (1st gear slightly engages drive with some funny sounds coming from the rear end).

Rest of the gears including reverse (bottom of the gate) are fine. No prior gearbox issues.

Had the Hills aluminium shifter bushing installed a few years ago so don't think it's that.

    Shifter cable/linkages most likely?

I had a similar problem with my gated 360. It turned out to be a little thingy at the end of the clutch cable broke loose and jammed the shifter in 5th. I suggest checking where the clutch cable connects to the shifting mechanism. It's pretty easy to see, unless you have the factory exhaust.

Have someone sit in the cockpit and try to shift while you check the linkage action at the transaxle. The fix for mine was to push the little thingy (a metal cylinder with a grommet inside) back into place.

It could also be too much slack in the cable or another adjustment. There are two cables. One controls the gear the other controls the bank (lower 2,4,6, higher 1,3,5). Check them both.

One cable transmits the left-right action of the gearstick, and the other transmits the fore-aft movement. Both of them together controls each gear then.

Most likely the cable controlling the fore-aft movement needs replaced or otherwise adjusted. Does it feel as if there is any slack? Might be that when the gearstick is moved forward, it’s not transmitting enough forward motion to the control plate on the gearbox.

Any time there is difficulty engaging gear it’s also worth looking for any leaks on the hydraulic circuit, especially given the clutch bleed block on manual 360/430’s is prone to cracking and leaking. Can’t hurt to give the system a quick bleed too to make sure there’s no air in there.

Thanks both. Ended up being exactly as described.

Sleeve at the end of the fore-aft gear cable was damaged/dislodged. Mechanic has wired tied this into place as a temporary measure (photo attached) until we get new cables in.

    Shifts better then before issue!
