It seems that ever since gas prices hit $3 per gallon the number of high-rise trunks on the road has increased significantly, now they're everywhere. Initially they were mostly ford f-250s (and still about 90%) but the other full size makes are on board too. One of the local dealers had the complete front row filled with them, and this is in the middle of the city.

My question; how did this trend start and with today's economy who could have foreseen this one? I did notice that a majority are driven by guys in the 25 to 35 age range (as they appear). You think that maybe it's because they grew up with the R/C versions and now want the real thing?

Just like why people own Ferraris and such. Because they can.

Its what there into, just like were into sports cars. Most of them will never be driven off road just like most ferraris will never see their top speed.

You should come to Calgary. Every second vehicle is a Dodge Ram 2500 with 33 inch tires on it. Im not much into these trucks, but the new Ford F250 Harley Davidson...I want one:

Maybe FL is just catching on.

It's been that way here for as long as I can remember. If I had pics of a few trucks that went to my college, you would **** a brick.

Yeah, back in Texas, they are everywhere. But there is open land that is reserved for off-roading. Must be catching on, the trend is probably just going places that a normal car cannot go.

What's interesting is that Florida is supposed to be in a recession and these are new trucks. Plus the gas mileage can't be good at all, especially for a daily. I can appreciate every aspect of car culture but did sort of expect something a little more frugal, but hey, it's their money ;)

Depends. If they have a diesel with the right programmer, they can get a huge hp/tq increase and good gas mileage.

I know a guy that's pumping out 400+hp out of his dodge ram diesel. He gets around 21 mpg. And he drives his truck like a mad man. His truck is lifted as well.

yep, i have the best of both worlds.. my fcar, and my daily driver that i can also take off road if i want. i thought that the jeep would be hell on my back and it wouldnt be all that good as a daily driver, but i swapped out the shocks for some procomp mx-6 adjustable shocks. i have them on the lowest setting and it drives like a Caddy now!

It's because even a bad American economy is still better than the rest of the world, and gas prices aren't really that high, just not terribly cheap. :)
