So true and they dont need much tweaking to keep Ferrari at bay. As always one of them could go backwards! Not likely these days.
I heard Mclaren have a mechanically adjustable rear wheel brake duct which essentially aids in controlling how much air is flowing around the tire thus aiding tire temp management. Openin the duct around the brake disc sends more heat thru the wheel to increase tyr temp. A legal way to manage tyre temps
By mechanically adjustable do you mean driver actuated? If so they may be looking to sneak through the legal door MB opened with their new duct.
Ferrari will have their full upgrade pack by the end of the week. We can tell what they're doing with the exhaust though, which is blowing the diffuser or at least the upper floor. Just from the pic it looks like its actuated when the brakes are applied or released. For want of a better descriptor a secondary effect of an allowed driver imput. Like the MB wing system.
That would mean it operates exactly how the Lotus' banned suspension system operated in that it 'moves' a piece as a secondary function. That is why it was banned. The MB system moves nothing, but reacts are a result of something that is moved. I've heard that the brake duct system Mclaren has is tuned according to tire temps and how much air they want flowing around it.
I may have phrased it poorly. I'm suggesting that like the M B wing it's activated incidentally to an allowed function. I guess I'm not clear as to how the Lotus device was banned and the M B wing allowed.
The Lotus system actually moved something is the difference. The Lotus suspenion had an actuator which was integrated to the pushrod which physically pushed the suspension up when the brakes were applied. Yes, it was secondary to the braking system, but it physically moved something to aid aero which is not legal.
Interesting sidepod wings from Sauber. I get the feeling they may not keep these as they certainly impede clean air flow to the back of the car almost acting like a gurney.......unless that's the idea. Image Unavailable, Please Login

I can go with the Merc Super DRS being legal - The FIA's ruling was pretty clear - Clever interpretation. However, given the Lotus system was outlawed I can't see how this Mclaren duct-thingy can be legal - It's gotta fall into the same trap as the Lotus system, surely? Suspect further clarifications "soon"....... Wonder if Charlie's in town? +1 Looks to me like they're trying to increase the flow over the pods by "capturing" and directing more air over 'em. Seems at least the Cans & Mclaren are doing deep study of what's going on between the exhausts & the beam wing - Those pressure sensors in some of the pix look a little "Heath Robinson" to me and suggest they don't know WTF is really going on back there. My 02c; Nothing about this mornings times tells us much beyond what we already knew - Clifford works OK'ish in crappy conditions. [Low grip, wet/dry, etc] Hopefully the weather will clear up tomorrow and they'll get some rubber down - Then watch Clifford go backwards...... Unless Fred puts in one his super human efforts and gives us all (false? ) hope. Cheers, Ian
