County bans parking along ‘the snake’

County bans parking along ?the snake? | May 19, 2016 | www.toacorn.com | Thousand Oaks Acorn

As a result of persistent problems with unsafe driving and loitering, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to prohibit vehicles from stopping at any time along both sides of Mulholland Highway in an unincorporated area south of Agoura Hills between Seminole Drive and just east of Kanan Road.

The restrictions affecting a two-mile stretch of the curvy canyon road, referred to by car and motorcycle enthusiasts as “the snake,” will take effect in about 45 days when new “No Stopping Anytime” signs are posted.

    Enlarge Map
Supervisor Sheila Kuehl spearheaded the change in collaboration with area residents to help the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in their efforts to stop reckless driving along the scenic highway in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Parking at a spot called “the lookout” on the south side of Mulholland about a quarter of a mile east of Kanan Road will be allowed, but limited to one hour between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.

In a letter to the Board of Supervisors, Kim Lamorie, president of the Las Virgenes Homeowners Federation, said accidents from unlawful motorcycle and car “speeding competitions” and activities on the snake stretch of Mulholland have been increasing at an alarming rate, with motorcycle crashes and overturned cars endangering all.

“They run motorists off the road,” Lamorie said. “To make matters worse, crowds gather roadside to watch the dangerous spectacle and illicit racing. The situation has clearly elevated to out of control.”

For years, onlookers have been gathering along the snake to watch the parade of cars and motorcycles navigate the turns. Many drivers show off and make moves, CHP Officer Leland Tang said.

“We’re trying to get a handle on this because it’s now a destination for car and motorcycle club members and others who have been turning the area into a racetrack. People who go there come from all over the state, and sometimes all over the country. They are making dangerous U-turns and cutting people off. They park their vehicles on the side, chit chat and encourage each other to push their limits,” Tang said.“They have taken that stretch of roadway over to the point where a family that wants to take a Sunday drive to enjoy the scenic highway can’t. It’s like taking a Sunday drive on the Willow Springs racetrack,” the officer said, adding that social media in recent years has made matters worse.

The new rule will prohibit stopping at any time along both sides of the two-way canyon road just east of Kanan Road and on to Seminole Drive. Parking at “the lookout” will be limited to one hour.

No, I meant an actual road bike lane so there is no way in hell your going to run down a pack of road bikes that have taken over the road. Most of the motorcycles move pretty good unless it's a Harley. Than your pulling your hair out.

I could have sworn I've seen you Jon on your bike while I was driving my Alfa 4C. It was a few weeks ago.

I remember the good olde days of growing up in Calabasas/Hidden Hills when you could enjoy those roads, Piuma, stunt, malibu cyn, PCH etc at any speed at any time. Then the cat got out of the bag. Angeles Crest will most likely be next.

Crest is used as a by-way to get to Palmdale from JPL. Lots of people drive it as part of their commute. What do you think will happen; stop and go lights with cameras near the twistiest parts? I used to do ACH and AFH twice a week late at night.

Good news, after years of pot hole and cracks and bumps they finally installed new pavement on one of my favorite roads to take my cars out for a cruise. If your into canyon carving and twistys Laurel Canyon to the 405 fwy is a great run. Can wait til its done.

It's a possibility they're thinking about measures. They call them "traffic calming patch". Patch the road sections at a time with those little white 6" bumps, or white reflector squares. When you run over them, they make the whole car go "brrrrrrrrrrrpppppppp", "brrrrrrrrrrrpppppppp".

Place turned into a death trap from street thugs with no concept of skilled driving.

Go to the race track and see how real men and woman can drive.

Those people in their spandex well I think it cuts off the circulation that's the only thing I can think of for their ignorance.

    :)

I went to the equivalent of an HOA for the canyon I live in and Beverly Glen. I beg for these. Drivers from the dreaded 818 morning and eveng commut use the canyons like a race track, cross lines, and there is at least one head-on accident a week from someone going cross-lines. I think we have a fatality a year between Benedict and Beverly Glen. Sometimes it is even going slow, people that can't be bothered slightly by staying in their lanes.

Ahh, the good old days of the Glen Center...At least 30 years have passed since I used to play Galaga in Santo Pietro's.. Mom still lives on Mulholland right across Chamberlin's old house. Fun day's on that stretch of road..

Oh yes, those were the days. George had a house on Mulholland with a glass garage that had a head on view of the city. I even think he had a Daytona. This was durring the Vanna Days. Chamberlin's house was really cool. I tried to buy it after he died, I even got to go inside "the special pink room (no longer there)." Great roads for sure, I personally enjoy going east though to Laurel Cyn from Bev Glen.

I am on Benedict. I get used to punching it to get between cars because I have to go north in the AM and South in the PM. Coming home is real easy, waiting to make a left can take a while every morning.

Went to do a little run on Sunday. The road was closed from Coldwater to Laurel. I went around the sign anyways since it was Sunday and having my drivers license with a Mulholland address i thought I would be ok. Smooth sailing all the way to the dog park right before Laurel. Both lanes **** down as they actually where working on a Sunday. .Had to turn back and head down Coldwater..Oh well, at least they are paving the road.!
