Have a funky fuel level guage in my 3.2 Mondi cab. Sometimes it thinks it's full (when it's not) and sometimes it thinks it's empty (when it's full). I've been using the OD to guage how far down the tank I am. I suspect the rheostat contacts in the float level sender unit are corroded - the car sat for a few years prior to my purchase and it has never worked right for me.

How do you get at the float/sender unit? Possible to do w/o removal of the tank? Is there a fiat/alfa/lancia part which is the same so I can skip the a$$ raping at the dealer? Thanks in advance!

Can anyone help with this one? Hoping somebody might have had some experience with a funky fuel level reading in a Mondial.... Any help is much appreciated - thanks in advance!

Cliff -- sorry can't help, but i have a similar issue with my 308 QV, though I suspect it's a little less drastic than your issue... I seem to get different readings (off by anywhere between a quarter and half tank) in the middle of a long drive versus stopped (say at a light). It's almost like the sensor behaves a little differently at speed.

Anyone got some thoughts on this (and on Cliff's issue!!) Thanks.

I'm glad Cliff brought it up. I have the same issue when there's about 1/2 of a tank left (based on resetting the OD at every fill up). I suspect that it has something to do with the complexity of the two sections of the gas tank. Thus far I just fill up around 150 elapsed miles (about 10-12 gallons to top it off). I'll ask my mechanic tomorrow when I pick up my car from very minor service.

    Staying tuned for the answers...

can't comment on the mondial configuration, but jwise posted a picture in this thread for a qv:

The trick is to unbolt the coil mounting bracket and move the coils out of the way, but I don't remember if that gives enough room to get the sending unit out.

Worst case is you have to loosen the tank straps so you can tip the tank a little...and the filler neck hose will be an irritant to doing that.

If you're lucky, the problem is just cruddy connections on the top of the sending unit, rather than a problem on the rheostat inside the tank. One wire on the sender is the for the low fuel idiot light (usually red/black), and the other (violet) is for the gauge.

Fuel gauge will move around as gas sloshes between the two tanks on corners, and if the system voltage levels are changing based on rpm, then the gauges will wander about also.
