    My laptop only has 3 USB ports, two of which are in constant use for an external keyboard and mouse. This means that I'm constantly switching connections to the one remaining port between my external hard drive, scanner, etc. Will something like this solve my problem?

    Yep.

    Many, many options but about the only important thing is that it have it's own power supply - Onboard ports often struggle to power peripherals. This type of unit solves that potential problem.
