What music do you folks listen to for relaxing in the evening? I'll go to Borders and buy one of your recommendations this weekend for a new listening experience. I'll let you know the result. This will save time because if you've ever been there, it takes forever to dig through and find music that is not mainstream. To get my day going, I have classic rock, contemporary, christian rock, etc. So, I'm all set there. However, here's what I have for the evening:

    Russell Watson
    Diana Krall
Opera Babes (good lookin' English women with incredible voices)
    Kenny G
    Josh Groban
    Point of Grace
    Eric Clapton (unplugged)

    Gimme a new recommendation. Thanks!

I love to listen to Plumb and Wax Poetic. They are both GREAT for relaxing. I might have to go home and listen to them tonight! Hope you enjoy....

Faust's self-titled album has a narcotic effect on me... though it shouldn't.
Harold Budd - The Serpent In Silver/Abandoned Cities is excellent music to watch cactus grow by.

Thanks to everyone! I just back from Borders. It was tough to choose so I'm getting at least one that each of you recommended. I have a couple of open questions but here is what I bought:

Dane - Enya, Watermark. They also had "Shepherd Moons" but it wasn't in the listening data base. Would you recommend it?

AC - Ani Difranco, Living In Clip

Aleah - Best of Plumb. They didn't have anything in the data base for Wax Poetic. Any other key words?

Tom I - I placed an order for Faust 1995. They didn't have it in stock. Is this the one you were recommending?

Tom G - Beegie Adair Plays the Songs of Richard Rogers

Alex - Jack Johnson, In Between Dreams

Thanks again. Everybody have a great week!

    Steve,

I when I found out about Wax Poetic, it was in college, so I suggest that you look for it on the internet through Amazon or something of the sort. It really is great music though! Let me know how you like Plumb!

    Happy Listening!

Another thing you want to try is just get a music downloading program, you can sample any song of that artist you were recommended, and for free! Its good because if you dont like that artist, no $$$ out of your pocket and no extra CDs around.

Then if you really like that artist, you can just burn it onto a blank CD and there you go!

Thats how I have my Ipod set up, tons and tons of songs, the only money I paid was for the Ipod itself.

I recommend Ares as a downloader, jsut type that in on google and you will find the program, the download takes 10 mintutes top and you dont get any advertisments or spam with this one, a lot of others generate A LOT of pop ups and such.

Thanks for the info on the Ares downloader. I will try it and do a search for Wax Poetic and other recommendations. This route looks like it will save a tremendous amount of time while covering a lot of territory. Thanks!

    Steve,

Let me know how you like Watermark! Yes, Shepherd Moons, I do recommend. I simply thought Watermark was a good first Enya CD. If one doesn't like Watermark, then he/she just may not be into Enya. If you do like Watermark, I'd recommend in order, (1) Paint the Sky With Stars, (2) Shepherd Moons and (3) A Day Without Rain; any one is a good album.

However, Enya (1987), The Celts (1992) and The Memory of Trees (1995) are albums I never really liked. Glad I could help.

try anything deemed 'downtempo' or chillout. thievery corporation is mellow. i have been creating my own stuff and remixing existing songs for years. i would be happy to send you some of my projects on CD, all my acquaintances really dig the stuff that comes out of mystudio - although i got my start as a house DJ and started creating and mixing house, rave and trance - 120bpm!!! i am in Denver too..............DJ 24

Nice to see someone jump right into it, boots half-on/off, like going after a "come-hither" cheerleader.

Have absolutely no idea what Faust 1995 is.

Highly experimental, not to everyone's taste, to put it mildly. As ambient music goes, it's industrial, but it unintentionally rocks me to sleep. It may be due to songs being in key of D - for instance, no matter how "enthusiastically" I hammer out D modals or chord variations on my dobro guitar, I get sleepy. Verrrrry sleepy. ZzzzzzZzZZZzzzz

To get into ultra-cool, relax on the Concorde mode with a come-hither stewardess - Roxy Music's Siren.

For the purer strains of ambient music, do seek out Harold Budd, or, if you wish to tap into Brian Eno, Another Green World is an excellent place to start. Soft Machine's Third is impact-resistant. Just a stunner. Pink Floyd played a distant second fiddle to them.

If you dig Velvet Underground and can balance winding up with winding down - Velvet Underground & Nico fills the bill, as does 1969 - first VU vinyl album I bought way back when. Their second album will only get you all riled up, so look for their third, self-titled album - which is folk music's hippest album.

Continuing on the acoustic theme - however, this time, wordlessly - do check out Fahey/Kottke/Lang - man, what a stunner.

With that in mind, here's a direct link which serves 2 purposes -

1] That's the album, do what thou wilt.
2] More importantly, this tips y'all into a site that'll just make your day -

    - I used this legal site for several years & got myself a formidable collection primarily consisting of Jazz, Blues & Folk in the process. There is also ambient, of course - I'll leave that up to you.

Did I mention there's 50 free tracks coming your way?

None of these are "adult-alternative" ambient-bandwagon jumpers. They were creative and inspiring predecessors.

There is similarity and diversity in the music listed here. I'll flesh out my list so when I go to pick up those I ordered, I can order the next round. I would have never found this many on-target recommendations by myself. For those reading this thread, you might give some of the music here a try. It's very good and a good fit for the evenng. Thanks again!
