While I was finishing my bowl of gruel I heard a distinctive rumble in the distant south. After a second or two, I knew what was coming and since there aren't any neighbors close by, I rushed outside in my PJ's in time to see a B-17 gracefully cruising by. Sentimental Journey is here.

I know that this doesn't impress anyone but if you lived with these airplanes for any length of time, they become part of your system. The sound of those R1820's increased the heart rate as it always does since they never leave your recall. The characteristic sounds of the P-51, Spitfire, B-25, F-8, and B-17 are unmistakable and always awaken your past. Now, all we hear is jets.

My dear friend Russ Karl from Illinois was a member of the Arizona Wing B-17 "sentimental Journey" based in Mesa and went on tour for several years.
Here are some pictures from the 90's.
Russ was the radio-man in B-17 "You Never Know" that belly-landed in France in September 1944. He came several times to visit the place and we became very good friends. Together we had a great time here in France and in the USA. His wife Ella was a nurse during WW2 and was on Tinian Island.

To help those who might not know, that second picture shows the chin turret gun sight and control to the right. The gunner in that position was the bomb aimer guy when he wasn't bomb aiming. Also, a correct interior that doesn't have the zinc chromate paint on everything as they were bare aluminum except in the flight deck to cut glare.

All the later R-1820 powered aircraft had a different exhaust system that made them sound rather harsh. This includes the FM-2, the T-28, the S2F and the HU-16.
