If Max Mosley gets his way, Formula One will switch to V6 engines in 2011.

The 2.2 litre turbo-charged formula, with power plants limited to just 10,000 rpm and running on biofuel, was set out by the FIA President in a letter to manufacturers, according to the magazine F1 Racing.

The radical proposal, to make F1 technology more cost-efficient, road relevant and environmentally friendly, will also involve single engines being used for a minimum of five Grand Prix, compared with the current two.


Also proposed for the 2011-2014 regulations are four-wheel drive, power-boost buttons and 'severely constrained' aerodynamics, such as the limitation of wind tunnel use, and the document was also sent to Volkswagen and Ford, who may enter F1 in the future.

"We understand that such an approach has broad support from the competing manufacturers," Mosley said.

You never know it maybe interesting as well as environmentally friendly, but lets see which Engine Manufacturers actually stick around with these rules.

This idea SUCKS. At this point in 10 years we'll have 1.0 liter V2 with 1000rpm racecars that get 20mpg. Please go back to V12s.

As you'd like to see the V12s and V10s come back many of us have wanted the turbos back. 10,000 rpm is fine with me as is AWD. I suspect that the future F1 car will be a hybrid with a v6-tt driving the rear wheels with the fronts being driven via electric motors. The batteries will be recharged through braking energy. Somebody better not tell the guys posting in the "I hate Prius" thread in Off Topic- Other Cars.

Now if they’d just get rid of the pit stops…

And this would make F1 different from ALMS how? Normally I agree with you Carol but of late you seem to be going off the deep end. This move will actually bring technology used in F1 to the cars we all drive. At the moment manufacturers spend hundreds of millions of dollars on technology that will never make it to a road car. The thing the ALMS currently has going for it is the technology being used is closer to the technology that is used in fans cars when they drive into the circuit to watch a race. Why is it so bad that F1 that advertises itself as the "Premier Technological" series actually wants to become that? Because it certainly isn't right now. You can find more technology in most road cars than you can find in an F1 car.

You're never going to have a road car that'll rev to 19,000 rpm much less 20,000. But, I guarantee you within 10 years you'll have Hondas, Toyotas and others doing 10,000.

Race on Sunday sell on Monday. It's been a long, long time since a manufacturer could do that. In the not too distant future they'll be able to again. F1 is a world sport. The world believes in the Kyoto treaty and curbing emissions and pollution. For some reason the U.S. does not so it doesn't surprise me that many on this board will bemoan these types of changes.

The world is moving forward and unfortunately the U.S. isn't leading the way. To me that's very sad.

 

Sounds like this will be even more boring than it is already.

For those of us who hanker for the good old days, it will be even harder to stay awake for the whole race.

I remember everyone complaining just a few years ago when the formula was changed to make the cars narrow, add treaded tires, etc. Every proposed change brings out the same exclamations of abandoning the sport. We stil watch the cars, we still debate the drivers.

No matter what the change, F1 is in to profit. The promoters will not do anything that would hurt that profit. It will succeed with turbo V-6's, just as it did with V10's and now V8's.

 

The only that sounds good are the powerboost buttons. Four wheel drive? only 10,000 rpms? Less power? Pfft that sounds like ****.

 

With gas at $3.20 Gal ... F-1 has to do something radical ... I think internal comubstion engines the way we know them have passed the apex of life!

In the 80's it was 1.5 liter turbo no boost cap... and they reved to 12-13K RPM... My guess is that they will make just as much power as now.

As for Ford going back in to F-1? are these people insane!!! they cant even make any money with out F-1 how will they come up with the Cash for a new development program?

VW - would be nice... but why? as Bugatti yes, but again why would they care?

 

Probably won't make much difference. Everyone was waiting for doom and gloom when the V8s came and it didn't happen did it? You can make crazy power with a V6 turbo, BMW was making over 1000 hp with a turbo 4 in the 80's.............

 

They worried about oil? Switch to alcohol! It's cleaner burning as well. I'm okay with turbos. I wouldn't mind seeing the turbo four cylinders back on the track.

 

V10's to V8's now to V6's. Well this sucks for me but it will be better for the environment I guess.

 

In an article in autoweek about a month ago, it stated that Audi is looking into a BTF (BioMass To Fuel) option for potentially next years Audi which will replace the current deisel. Biomass being basically a plant powered car.. I think that would be pretty amazing to come up with technology like that and put it in their racecars... Apparently they're testing all this year so who knows.... 08' = the start of environmentally friendly racecars??? Maybe?

Just watch any of the reviews from the 80s. It's all good racing. Small power plants with no refueling on pit stops. Drivers being forced to turn the boost up or down themselves in order to overtake and make the fuel last the race, economy racing at its best.

 

Ferrari does have "The Prancing Horse", as it's Nameplate, maybe F1, could go back to the horse, for environmental purposes?

Felipe Massa's first name, Felipe, is Spanish for Philip, which derives from the Greek, as a lover of horses! Nothing to do with the problem, but a bit of useless information.

In today's times, with the world in such an energy crises, Bernie, should make it a Formula Libre, and allow anything from flywheels, rubber bands, compressed air, solar power and moon beams, or whatever.

Seriously, with the world's best automotive minds and engineers, tackling the problem, it would be a showplace for new thinking and economics.
