I will be in Europe over the next three weeks (UK, Paris, Stuttgart, Monaco, Rome, Modena, MIlan). Looking for great places to stop and eat or just enjoy automobiles.
Stuttgart has the Porsche museum Modena has Ferrari nearby - UK is a country not a town - when you know your schedule better maybe the advice might be better - there's no point giving you several days of outings if you are only there a few hours - especially when much of that data is already on this site eg cremepuff guide to Maranello
Ditch the UK. You can get fish and chips at Captain D's. Hit Prague and Vienna, instead. Chicks in Prague are H-H-H-H-HOT. Seriously. They all come from this amazingly narrow but deep gene pool. City is pretty cool, too. Lost of old stuff that wasn't blown to bits in the war. Vienna is tops. Vienna is what you imagine all European cities to be: Clean, organized, full of friendly people and interesting relics from glory long past. Much of Europe isn't any of those things. (And, oddly, they don't serve those little hot dogs in Vienna, so bring your own.) Rome is great but, unless you have some time to explore it, it can be a drag. Traffic is awful. Streets are narrow. You will get lost. Only Mogadishu is worse. Skip the Vatican and focus on the ancient stuff. You've seen one church, you've seen them all. Il Duomo-this, Il Duomo-that. They're everywhere. But there's only ONE Colosseo! Milan. Awful. Pretty much like any modern city, except the people mostly speak with their hands. Go a little north and visit Bergamo, instead. Very picturesque. Ride the cable cars. Eat some ravioli. Drink some beer. Have fun!
One of, if not the BEST automotive museaums in Europe is just outside of Heidelberg, Germany in Sinsheim. Run a search here. One of the German locals (FarOut = Florian) posted a bunch of pics in a thread awhile back. It is a MUST SEE if you want cars/vehicles/planes ....... Stuttgart IMO is a pretty crappy town. A bussling city like most anywhere. IF YOU ARE DRIVING, BE VERY AWARE of the speed cameras. You can easily rack-up 5 or 6 speeding tickets in a single day in that town. 5 or 6 .... in a SINGLE DAY? YEP, it HAS been done ... Nope. Not me. My "best effort" was 3 in a single morning ....
If you can, I would suggest to drive from Stuttgart to Singen and visit the Autosalon and the Ferrari dealer there. The Autosalon has usually around 20 Ferraris and lots of other exotics there. I've seen Veyron, MC12, Koenigsegg, Mercedes CLK GTR Roadster and many others there. The Ferrari Dealer Gohm has a big parking area under the Bentley showroom where they usually have another 20+ F-cars stored. You might also want to stop in Böblingen at the Meilenwerk. There is also a smal shop of Ferrari Gohm, Lambo and Rolls dealer and many other cars. When I was there last time (a month or two ago) they had two McLaren SLR Cup cars. I guess there should be a lot of pics from the Auto Salon and Ferrari Gohm here (search function) and I think I posted some pics of Meilenwerk too. But I can't remember when. I'll visit the Meilenwerk again this week and if I find the time I'll post some pics. Sinsheim is realy nice too, but I haven't been there in the past 10 years or so. The Mercedes Museum is also quite nice. Haven't been to the Porsche Museum, but it's said t be a nice place too. And, as was already said, take care about the speed cameras. There are a lot in Stuttgart city and the area around, you don't even regognize when the new ones take a pic of you But so far they never catched me there, you just need to know where they are Martin
Alan Ducasse in Paris, incredible dinner and wonderfull non stuffy service We stayed at the http://www.princedegallesparis.com/, great location, pretty good hotel, we did soemthing a little different, a running tour of paris... Prauge is incredible, The Opera is a must, even if you arent into the opera to much its a great experince, very cheap city to have fun, though we splurged at the four seasons. Give the michelin starred restaurant in the four seasons a miss, over priced and over hyped, very average. Make sure you go somwhere and get the pork knuckle with local beer, night life is great, though lots of briuts there on stag/bachlorette nights getting wasted Oh, go to one of the acthedrals for a classical concert, it was great cheers
See the link below about my German travel guidebook. Take a look at the Table of Contents and post any questions you may have.
Germany? Sinsheim? well if you travel to there from either France or the UK.. you pass Brugge... you pass SPA Francorchamps.. and you pass The Nurburgring.. If history is your thing... how about The Somme or Ypres for WW1... and then you could throw in Normandy and vist Omaha beach. You can eat anywhere along the way, you need to absorb some history too!
I know we will be returning in the fall to Spain and Portugal. For now just London, Stuttgart, Paris, Monaco and Rome. We are not going to make a stop in Milan but will stop in St. Tropez. We will have to see the Auto Salon while in Germany. We will be spending the better half of this Month in Europe so we do have the time.
Definitely do Sinsheim and Speyer. Do Mercedes and Porsche in Stuttgart and BMW in Munich. Do a factory tour at Porsche. Do the ex-Schlumpf collection in Mulhouse, France. Do Spa - especially if there is a club event underway. There are a bazillion car-related things to see and do. The german guidebook referenced above is a great idea and resource.
We will be staying at the International in Paris and the Waldorf in Rome. We will be able to take advantage of at least half of the suggestions people have made due to how close they are to our original plans. Great ideas, Cheers , Eric
The Ring is a must see for me I just would want to rent something substantial enough to take around the track.
If you rent, be sure to rent a race car to take around the Ring. Rental cars from Avis, Budget, ect.. are not insured for the Ring. In fact your rental policy most likely out right forbids driving on it. There are a number of places to start. Try starting with Sabine Schmitz at http://www.speedbee.de/
If I can find something there to rent that is trackable I will make sure to take advantage. Otherwise I'll have to wait until later this year for our European delivery and take that around the track. Either way what bliss.
Venice is tops. Been there twice and will go back in a heartbeat. Rome, Florence, Naples, and Paris are very nice as well.
Surely a stop in Amsterdam, specifically the Red Light district, is a must? Best two weeks of my life so far lol!!!
Yikes, Not the wild ride I was looking for . I'm sure the scenery is great but I will be with my wife. Thanks for the tip, Eric
Just an idea and you would not believe the numerous number of couples, even elderly ones, gawking and getting frisky. Other than that it is a beautiful city with lots to do and see. Brussel's was quite nice also and the scenery on the train into Amsterdam was marvelous. Anywho I know you have an agenda so have a great trip and make sure you share pics. Best and happy travels, Gregg
I have heard a lot of fun stories stemming from trips to Amsterdam. I will make sure while we are over there to send photos. Our main goal is to have fun. We are also there for business for our Concours d'Elegance in July. I love my job.
