    MY 1978 308 WONT DOWN SHIFT 4TH TO 3RD & 3RD TO 2ND AND HARD SHIFTING 1ST TO 2ND AND 2ND TO 3RD BUT SHIFTS FINE 3RD TO 4TH AND 4TH TO 5TH DOES THIS SOUND LIKE TRANS AXEL OR CLUTCH ? ANY INSIGHT ON THIS I WOULD APPRCIATE !

    Lots of info on this forum about these problems. Try searching. Probably shifting forks out of alignment or the rubber seal where the linkage passes through the transmission is shot and needs to be replaced.

    Seems to me that if it were those suggested things (although they could be correct), then it would be a problem with all the gear shifts. Sounds to me like maybe a syncronizer rings problem for those specific gears. Good luck.
