My 355 on EBay just hit the reserve price and will be sold! Now that it looks more certain, I'm kind of feeling bad about it now. Someone talk me out of it!

Just curious if any of you have had expeerince selling a car to a buyer on EBay...just wondering if the winner will flake out or end up being for real.

I've sold a few cars and boats on Ebay. Not ONE of the auction winners ever panned out but I DID sell the cars and boats to non-winning bidders. Ebay and flakes go together like ham and eggs. Ebay is a good place to advertise a rare item to a large audience. Now, I just set my reserve so high that nobody wins and I contact the bidders privately. Like I said, I've only done a few Ebay car/boat transactions so I may be the exception, not the rule.

I've sold vintage cars on eBay. worked out fine. Yer gunna get deadbeats on any auction on eBay. Contact is key, particularly on high $ items. If someone bids and asks no questions... be wary. Email them.

Dave- I have sold tons of cars on Ebay- as long as the bidder has good feedback, you have nothing to worry about. Keep me posted, and let me know if you need help with anything.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the EBay buyers can be hit or miss. We'll see. If I get nothing going here, I'll be in contact Alex!

And Greg, I think you didn't hear me cry, but you might have heard the exhaust wail as I took her out for a spin yesterday before the rains came in! I hate to see her go (hopefully to a good home) but I've added several more vehicles to the garage in the last year, and have anther special one on order for later in the year...and something has to go!

    Dave,

I understand. We have four now, and I don't know where to put them.

I need more space for my business, so i am sourcing the building next door door to large overhead doors and plenty of inside space!

Stop by some time with your new toys.

I have to show you my 360.

I hope your deal does go through.

Thanks Luke.... I just cleared out all my mailbox messages so should be good now.

Sounds like you'll be talking to the same people at the Walnut Creek shop as I did (Cole). I ordered my AM V8 from Debby Johnson there, for November delivery. I test drove it last week and it is a wonderful car. Say Hi to Debby for me...

I have sold a number of cars on ebay, including my ferrari 355. With the 355, it didn't quite hit the reserve, but later one of the bidders made an offer and ultimately purchased the car. I would suggest you screen the bidders and remove any bids from people with ratings below 98.5% - while you can't keep all the people in the world happy, you should be able to at least only annoy 1 out of 100 :) Ideally, 100% feedback ratings if possible.

In my case with the 355, I had planned a 15K service at SF ferrari, so I offered to meet the guy up there. He flew in from CO with his wife. Once SF did the inspection and signed off on the car, I let them drive it around the block a couple of times (with one of the techs from Ferrari). The buyer tried to low ball me on the price, but when I said, "don't worry about it, I'm driving home if we don't do this deal - this was just routine service" he came up to the full price. His wife worked at a bank and had a bank check with her, so it was a smooth deal from start to finish pretty much.

I also sold a high performance Mitsubishi on ebay. A guy who worked for the IRS actually bought it. He was working with a credit union and they paid after I sent the title to them. I had to wait 20 days for him to show up from up north and drive the car home, but it wasn't a big deal.

I also sold my Renault R5 turbo II on ebay. Some guy up north bought. I listed it on ebay, but it didn't hit the reserve. The guy up north made an offer later and I accepted it. If I remember correctly, a couple of the guys who worked for him flew down in a private plan and paid cash, then drove off. I personally wouldn't want to drive an R5 200 miles on the highway, but I guess they were happy :)

The main thing on ebay is to post a detailed description, a lot of high quality photos and then screen your bidders (it's fair to everyone that way and people know they are bidding against people who intend to pay).

If I were selling a ferrari, I would list it on ebay with a reserve slightly higher than what I would take. I think I would also list it on cars.com or perhaps drautos.com. Those seem to be the hot spots lately.

    :)

    Ray
