    Hi,
My new to me 2003 575M has arrived with questions. Pics and more details to come soon, but first, is it suppose to make this much mechanical noise? Seller sent me this video after a PPI required Timing belts, Tensioners, and Cam Cover Leak repairs. I thought it was just the phones microphone making it sound very machine like, but its pretty accurate to these old ears. I think I remember my 308GTB sounding like an industrial machine, tho my Maserati 4.7 does not.
And as long as we're at it, I was surprised by the tranaxle gear noise. Its not terrible but I can definitley hear it a bit of whine in 1-2-5 gears. I think a Fiammenghi exhaust will solve all my problems except for the tickets, insurance premiums, and my drivers license.
    Thanks
    Bill

From the sound in your recording, something seems off. Have it checked out before you drive it...

Personally, I would change all the fluids on her just to get a baseline. The whining could be caused by the wrong transaxle oil. Should be 75W-90 Synthetic GL5 and no telling what someone put in there.

Can't get the file to play but when my 575 makes increased "mechanical noises from the engine, it turns out to be a bearing associated with the cam belt drive. My first experience with bad bearings was at 2 years of age and 10,000 miles and several since then.

Before everyone goes all worst case scenerio... was this video from a cold start? Was your secondary air pump running? In my 456 the secondary air pump is loud and makes a significant and unique noise that doesn't sound particularly satisfying. But after 90 seconds or so it turns off and motor noise is good.

I would recommend a gear oil flush as well. I use 5L of the following. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QL31M3O?linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1&tag=sofferscom1-20

When you do the gear oil flush, also replace the f1 relay.

    See this for reference: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/best-gear-oil-for-a-f1-575.653223/

I change mine every 2.5-3 years or so (between majors)

Sounds like it also needs a major but bearing sound will be coupled to engine RPM speed regardless of gear.

    Both should be done regardless.

Thanks for the replies, the car just had a major service from a very reputable Ferrari / Italian car place. This included the timing belt service, all fluids (Engine, Transaxle, Brakes, etc).
The noise does lessen a bit as it warms up but is still very noticable after 30 minutes.
I'm hoping the reason they weren't concerned about it is maybe its just an idler bearing for the auxillary belts or ?????
How about someone posting a video of their engine running from the same camera angles so I can hear the difference.
    Thanks

Are you near the place of service? Can you have them take another look?

That sounds like a belt-related bearing, but the video makes hard by nature to locate the source.

If you sit in the car with the windows closed, can you still hear it? Does it change with engine speed when you open the throttle?

The air pump makes a high pitch noise for 2 min 35 sec on a cold start up, very different from the sound in the video.

No, the seller is 1200 miles away.
Sound does change with engine RPM and can be heard in the car.
Reading threads here I believe I read that the computer will move the throw out bearing away from the clutch after a time so I think that rules out the TO bearing and transaxle. I know noises reverberates thru out the driveline but pretty sure it’s something at the front of the engine.
My Maserati has that air pump and you’re right it’s loud for 1st 90 seconds or so but this noise is different.

The clutch is always open when you are stopped with F1, regardless of gear selected or neutral, and the throw-out bearing is a constant contact type.

These are pretty noisy engines. Lots of stuff going on down there.

Used a stethoscope to try and locate the offending item. I’m hoping it might just be an idler bearing for one of the auxiliary belts. I’ll get it up in the air and pull the bottom shield and probably the auxiliary belt covers. Don’t want to take too much apart as I’ll want to run it for a few moments once the auxiliary belts are off.

Anyone know where I can get a service/workshop manual? EBAY didn’t have one.
    Thanks

Some comments about your post #7. Good, quality, reputable Ferrari repair shops automatically change the auxiliary drive belt tensioners when doing a belt job. In 48 years now in the Ferrari service business clients who come in and tell me I have Carte Blanche to make their car perfect because it is being sold are less common than unicorns. It is always "do it the cheapest way you can". Its why I advocate in 100% of the transactions to get a purchase discount in the amount of the cars deficiencies and have it done by your guy to your standards. Too much downside to the possibilities to a noise around the front of the motor. Do not drive it and get it to a real live competent Ferrari mechanic now and quit the internet guess-a-thon.

Problem is partially if not totally solved. I took off the Water Pump and Power Steering Pump belt and the noise was still there. Then I removed the Alternator and A/C Compressor belt and VOILA! Noise is gone. I would say the belt was too tight but I need the belt tool to figure that out. Anyway, put both belts back on according to how tight I think they should be and there's very little noise.
I'll order an Idler Pulley Bearing for that side as it was noisier than the Alternator, and A/C Compressor made the same very little noise whether the clutch was engaged or not.
I appreciate all the comments and help.
Video is with no belts on and I believe it sounds like a V12 Enzo would approve of. :)

PS my nerves are now calm now but my neck is on its way to the Chiropracter, a fair exchange if you ask me.

I knew it. Well done. I like the plastic tensioner pulleys on the 575/612, which must be lighter than the steel ones on the 456/550 though do not seem adaptable because of different other parts in the loop. Has anyone tried the upgrade?

Order at least 1 spare bearing to go with that too

For the half pound difference in a 2 ton car I prefer the steel pulleys. The bearings can be replaced with quality parts ensuring better reliability than being saddled with the factory cost consciousness giving us 3rd world quality at aerospace prices.

I was more thinking about a very slight decrease in the power lost through ancillaries, but in practice should make zero difference on such engines. Being able to replace the bearing alone rather the whole pulley each time is definitely an advantage.

I knew exactly what you were talking about and I rejected it because as you pointed out it is pointless.
I focus on a quality product, not promises of rainbows and unicorns.
