Steering the California bashing toward something more on-topic: Since it’s inception in the late’60s, the federal Clean Air Act allowed California to conduct its own program of auto emissions regulation. Along the way this exception was expanded to allow the other 49 states to opt into the Cali regimen. As of late 2022, 17 states had opted in (New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Washington, Oregon, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Colorado, Minnesota, Nevada, Virginia, and New Mexico). Without looking it up, I would say these 17 states plus Cali are home to at least 50% of American car owners and their cars. So while it’s fun to bash fruits-n-nuts California, in this arena you’re talking about the majority of Americans.

That said, it seems that each state can pick and choose wrt the administrative details, including a scheme for emissions testing at registration renewal time. That’s where we get, every two years in California for cars more than 8 years old, the checking of ECUs for aftermarket reflashing, via a hookup with the OBD II port. This element came into effect in 2021 iirc. Evidently, even if you pass a visual inspection and a sniffer test, and have no CEL or other faults, you still get a fail and a mandate to repair and report to a Bureau of Automotive Repair referee, if the OBD II hookup detects a reflash. As mentioned, any of the 17 me-too states could opt out of this mandate. But they could also drop the hammer without warning. At the least it’s something to consider when modding your car’s ECU.

Nick, I hear you. Family comes first and childrens' good education is key for parents to live a less stressful and happy midlife and senior years. Camarillo remains a conservative-leaning enclave as has been since we moved here from Nu Joisey in 1980.

Malcolm, agreed especially against woke politics! To each his own I suppose, but CA woke politicians offer "knee jerk" solutions to all kinds of social and environmental issues yet they've come up with failure after failure that keeps increasing taxes yet don't resolve the true root cause of CA's problems, that includes "climate change". I can offer more detail but that'd take us too off topic.

BTW, FCA Southwest Region recently started a chapter in San Diego a few months ago. The owner of Bobileff Motors was quite instrumental in its inception and current new Chapter President is Kevork Hashas. Are you a chapter member?

Love San Diego as well and have relatives living there. Our oldest son graduated from University of San Diego in 1998.

Is there a GTO ECU and TCU tune that can be applied to a late model year 599 HGTE? I'm guessing the topic of the thread is to tune early build 599 GTBs to have the HGTE tune right? Or is the tune a modification of the HGTE tune? Because my HGTE still has some head snapping and lag in shift
