My 83 QV Resto

So, Fredos transaxle is back together, whew!! Good news is didn't need any new parts, as they are hideously expensive, bearings are $500 a pop, synchro rings are $1000 each, get the idea. Bad news was it took me two days to figure out how to get everything fitted back into the case, big heavy Rubics cube, only one specific order to get everything into place. Beer time.

Working on the motor mounts. Using the mustang prothane mounts, but making my own mounting plates, the mustang ones just look wrong.

Finished Fredos motor mounts today, yeah I know I suck as a machinist. Now I can put the trans into the sub-frame, and then the motor on top of the trans. Getting close. At least no more cleaning grease, and scraping gaskets.

Alright! Fredo has four cams, belts tensioned, gross cam timing is perfect! Tomorrow will do final cam timing. This thing is going to rip ****!

So Fredos transaxle is reunited with his sub-frame, will finish dialing in the cams and then place the motor on the transaxle next.

So, cam timing on Fredo is finished, took two days to do the first cam, 2 hours for the other 3. Ferrari does things in a strange manner, many hours learning how they measure cam timing, and many more figuring out how to adjust it. Actually very simple once you understand what they intended. Valve clearance set, test fitting covers. Motor goes on to the transaxle tomorrow.

So, when you are half way thru one of these restorations, you look at the pile of greasey parts, and say, "why the **** am I doing this?" If you can press thru that part, and get to where the end is in sight you think" this is going to be ****ing awesome!" Flywheel resurfaced, new clutch, and pressure plate. Tomorrow the drop gears, and the motor/sub-frame can go back in the car. Goal is to have Fredo running and driving by end of September.

Big day! drop gears all installed, cover bolted down. This was the last major assembly of the motor, now it's just all the detail ****. Going to have a couple of beers!!

So Fredos motor/trans is about ready to go in the sub-frame. First need to get the suspension back together. 17 new bushings per side, 3 pcs each bushing, made on my lathe. Takes about 20 minutes per piece, do the math. I'll finish rebuilding the hubs, paint, and then final install.

So, just curious why everyone is so afraid to make comments on my posts? I know I have been black balled by the powers that be for some arcane reason, but do they really put the fear of god in you? I see more responses to posts by someone who figured out how to change his windshield wipers than I get on mine. Not looking for a pat on the back, could care less actually, but constructive criticism would be welcome. Just saying.

 

Progress on Fredo, crank position sensor finished along with crank reluctor wheel, suspension is complete, hubs completely rebuilt, just wrapping up some details. Had to do a ton of machining to get to this point. Have to get the exhaust headers cleaned up, and then the motor goes back into the sub-frame for the last time. Beer time.

It's all in the details now! My former colleague, and friend Dan Nobles was kind enough to print these air horns out of NylonX for me. One on the left has a boss that I could drill and tap for the IAT sensor. Gray fittings on the bottom are for manifold pressure to the ECU. Sub-frame has new brake lines fitted. Need to fit the emergency brake cable, and then I can drop the motor back in the frame. Dan has made many other parts for me, and I will feature them as assembly continues.
