Well... its time for me to face the ever so dreaded "major service".. .my car is at the garage, and has the engine out, and getting ready to get "tuned", only 4,000miles on it...

There is a slight leak of engine coolant at the head gasket, so that has to replaced, and the timing belt "rollers??" are dry and got to be replaced as well, and pretty much everything else done in the major. I am not doing the clutch, it is still ok, an upper ball joint has to be done as well.

add to that the X-OST and test pipes... ... car will sound sweet, and I will have a "major dent" in my wallet...

oh well...better to spend the $$ on the car, than on the X-wife...

The only thing I think I would want to change is the mileage. 4000 miles in 13 years is a lot of missed grins.

    Pictures, please!

Please report back on the status of the belts.

    1) Like new
    2) Age-related cracks or deformation
    3) Belt-tooth sheared or near failure
    4) Blue-ing of belt from heat
    5) OH MY G-D - just in time

Please comment further on the "dry rollers". Are you referring to the sealed chain tensioners?? They should be dry. These are sealed bearings and do not require maintenance or lubrication until that dreaded squeal.

The status of the timing belts were uhhh.... mostly age related wear and tear, these were the original timing belts of the car, and were pretty dried out, so were the alternator and a/c belts.... they didn't look like they were torn up, or sheared, but you can tell they were not "fresh".

As for the rollers... maybe they are tensioners... i have no idea, i can't find the part number on the online schematics... i have included an image... the mecanic told me that these "rollers" could seize, and cause the timing belt to slip, and would be wise to replace.

I was in a hurry on friday when i went to the garage, I didn't have my camera... i have to go back this week ... and for sure I will take some pictures of the engine out... they might already be working on the head gaskets, so the engine will be even more apart... it was kind of cool to stand under the car (car was on lift of course)... with the engine out, i felt like I was at a forumla one garage! ....

I think you say later that these are the original belts? Very risky IMO as it is generally thought that these need to be changed every 5 years irrespective of mileage. They deteriorate with heat and as your mechanic has noted the tensioners deteriorate too. I changed my Audi Sport Quattro belt in 2001 for teh first time since it was built - in 1984. I consider myself very lucky although the owners manual does not specify a change interval at all - we know better today.
