Hi to everyone. I want to share my experience with all the F-Chat guys, importing a 308 QV from the States to Europe. I bought the car on February by eBay. The money wire were really difficult from both of us, seller and buyer, but finally we worked it out. The seller told me the car was Ok, with only a little overheating problem. I contacted with two of the previous owners, and I'd collected all the possible info. Everything was pretty fie; I know all the car's story, maintenance, owners -thanks to www.308QVregister-. I've noticed that the rear tyres were in really bad shape; the seller agreed to buy them. Perfect! The real problem was the shipping. I bought the car on February, and I've just received her the past week!!!!! My forwarding agent was simply idiot! I've paid $3,500 US and I've received a very poorly service. Delays, the car was practically stranded in every port, and totally abandoned. The car has visited all the possible ports... Finally my agent called my to pick up the car one week later after arriving to Barcelona! Imagine the car receiving the hot sun all this time, suffering the acid rain directly, no parked on a garage but in mid air... After waiting a lot of time in the port office to arrange the documents, circa 3 hours, I've met her... What a disaster!!! The car was totally dirty, the doors were open and the car was looted... Somebody at the port -on one or on all of the European ports that the car visited- stolen the Ferrari script logo on the rear hood, also the original tools were stolen, the warning triangle, other tools, one of the interior vents with the Ferrari logo was stolen also... Incredible. The front hood also was forced and bent... Well. The experience was really terrible. Now I've practically bought all the stolen items at a good price on Eurospares, Superformance... and now I'm triyng to solve the overheating problems -maybe thermostat and bleeding-. If I need any help, I will post you guys!! When the 308 is 100% fixed, I will post some photos. Ooopps! And I've to finish the process to register the car in Spain, difficult, expensive and tricky. I will let you know. Regards Image Unavailable, Please Login
Really sorry to hear about your misfortune. I hope you can get things squared away. These really are great cars, and you'll have a blast with it in Spain, once you get all things squared away. Jim
Very sorry to hear of all these troubles, a somber note to ship the loose items apart from the car maybe, but hard to believe they would take the actual emblems from the car! Hope your dirving times return the smile to your face... But to cheer you up, I once read of a '62 250SWB alloy car arriving in California, aluminum body battered with dents, with it's loose open doors tied closed with a rope!!! So you can make it all right, with time, we'll be waiting here to help..... Overheating: Flush/fill fresh coolant, confirm one fan running via radiator thermo switch, 2nd fan comes on with A/C system. Many have modded this to have BOTH fans come on via thermo switch...that helps here in Texas.....a weak fan or bad switch is my guess, also bleed air again and again and again.....
Time and unfortunately money will heal. That's a shame what happened. Don't let it ruin this car for ya. Remember you own a 308. Congrats..now bleed that thing over and over and over.
You had insurance on the shipping, right. A friend of mine had a problem shipping a car from Europe to US but the insurance covered all his damage and then some.
I have had similar experiences importing from England to the U.S. - it can be very difficult, time consuming, and frustrating. Try not to be discouraged, keep positive and keep your eye on the target, which is driving that gorgeous car on fantastic roads in Spain. The vandals may have stolen some peripheral items, but nothing that will ruin your car - they didn't take your engine, trans, paint, tires / wheels, glass, etc.. you'll be OK. Don't lose faith - OK to be frustrated, and yes, I would definitely follow-up with that shipper and likely I would threaten lawsuit to at the very least, get back the money you spent replacing the stolen parts, and part of your shipping costs. On a brighter note - congrats on your purchase, and hey, you now have a really good looking Ferrari.. I love 308's! It's in your loving hands now and will be for a long time to come. Jim
Antonio, Firstly congratulations on your purchase. I agree with Jim - although you have not had the best experience, there is nothing that can't be replaced of fixed relatively easily. And when that's done, you are going to have the time of your life!! You will not be sorry. I also had an "interesting" purchase experience (i.e. great car; pity about some of the a***holes involved). But I can safely say that going through the tough experiences brought me closer to the car as I was way more involved with it up front than I would have been otherwise. Hang in there and enjoy the pleasures of owning a Ferrari in Spain! Regards from England, MARK
Part of the reason for the high shipping cost is the insurance. Make sure you go after the shipper and have them cover the expenses to repair the car. Looks nice BTW. Hope you enjoy it.
sorry to hear what happened to you,in 1970 my dad and I had a 1969 pontiac LeMans shipped from the u.s. to spain (dad was in the air force)we didn't have things stolen of it but getting it to clear customs was a *****
Beautiful car and sorry to hear of your headaches. I'm certain your insurance will cover your damages but yes, I'd be irate also. Forwarders are responsible for customs clearances, shipping costs, insurance and vessel routings, basically whatever a vehicle will need to get from here to way over there. They put together a package after assembling all the costs. Depending on what your priorities are, costs vary mildly, but if it is piece of mind you're after, the only way to go is 20' container. I'm assuming your 308 was sent RoRo ? RoRo works best IF you've got a direct routing and the vehicle is delivered at the last possible moment before vessel departure. It's also a good idea to be present when the vessel arrives at destination or at least be able to pick your car up as quickly as possible from the terminal, ie: next morning. RoRo is an easy and less expensive method of shipment however it's probably a bad idea if you have any transshipment points, especially the case if your car is very desirable. Not that anything can be done now but I'm hoping the forwarder informed you of all options and possible pitfalls. Flipside, I've witnessed Miuras and a 275GTB/4 transported via Roro without problem. After all the trouble you've gone through, I'm certain you'll have your car at 100% in no time. As others have said, it's only a flesh wound and the good news is you own a Ferrari!!! Things could be worse. Best of luck!!
Many thanks guys. You really encourage me to go straight to fix all these little inconveniences, at least, easy to fix with few bucks. My forwarding agent told me that there's no insurance for such things, only total loss of the car... Well, as you told me, I own a real Ferrari, and I love it!!! I will bleed, and bleed, and bleed, of course, I will change the thermostat and we will see. And I will add also Water Vetter. And yes, one fan is running but the other one no. Maybe I will switch to run together at the same time, because here the temp and the humidity are high. About the irondogmike Pontiac, curiously my father bought twenty years ago a beautiful 1959 Pontiac Bonneville that was property from one at the US Air Force in Madrid, Torrejón. Really a beautiful car! Unhopefully he sold the car -too big for the Barcelona streets!-. I will keep you posted
I would have recommended a shipping container with LOCKS....but hey, sounds like the damage is mostly cosmetic.
I lived a few blocks from plaza Castella(spelled wrong)and went to Torrejon for three years @ the high school, wow, hope to go back next year maybe I'll see you there
Antonio, sorry to hear about your bad experience. Its unbelievable that there are so many dirtbags in the world. Anyway, I hope this all gets sorted out soon.
Very sorry to hear about the misfortune here. You'll forget about it all when she is up and running! They are WONDERFUL cars. On a side note, has anyone looked into shipping a Ferrari by air? I was told by an Airline pilot that companies like Lufthansa will ship cars and the price is very competetive. Just curious...(I'm not shipping anything...just thinking about this situation.) JIM
ok,I'll stay in touch with you on ferrari-chat,and please enjoy your car,I have a few bugs myself to work out but I'm enjoying it in the mean time,I've been to Barcelona on our way to Benadorm(wrong again)
this is very sad to read. shipped my baby from UK to NZ, no problems at all, I really hope yuor insurance will cover the damage...when all done and yuo're driving her, you will quickly forget the drama I promise you!
I would check further on the insurance. No coverage except for a total loss sounds hokey. Call the insurance company directly I would not trust the shipping agent. Regardless, enjoy the car they are true smile makers.
Thanks dwhite. Maybe it will be the best idea, call directly to the insurance company... Many thanks again for your support guys. Now it's time to work on it and to enjoy!!! ;-)))
I know that hindsight is always 20/20, but you should have shipped the car in a 20ft container. I did (from Germany to Canada), and if I recall correctly the price was well below $3000 CDN - plus I could send all my other personal effects (bike, books, PC etc.) in it... Anyway, good luck and lots of fun with your car!
