I'm new to these cars, and I'm sort of surprised by how loud it is inside the cabin. How loud? So loud you can't really have a conversation with the passenger and probably should wear some sort of hearing protection if you're going to do a long drive.

The car is mechanically sound - I've just had it gone through front-to-back by a great mechanic and fixed everything. It's a euro and is wearing its original exhaust system (single pipe).

I owned a GTS QV about a decade ago, and it wasn't nearly as loud - I guess the injected motors are quieter?

Mine has Euro headers, Tubi exhaust and P6 cams. It’s loud out back. But inside, no.

Maybe you are missing something on the firewall behind the seat inside? Mine has a nice maybe 3/8 batting or foam with vinyl (or leather) on top.

If you have a radio, it's quiet enough to listen to it at a reasonable volume? Mine doesn't have a radio, and I can't image one being of value given how loud it is in my cabin.

No radio. But I can talk to my wife in there. So maybe you shouldn’t change anything.;)

Is it the exhaust that is loud or the induction sound coming from the Carbs? Do you have the passenger window open while driving?

It's not the exhaust, and there is certainly induction noise, but it's more of a "sum of the parts, everything that's going on behind my head" sort of cacophony. I'm driving with the windows up.

I'm wondering if I am missing some sound insulation? There's none under the floorboard carpets, and I've not checked the firewall yet.

"and probably should wear some sort of hearing protection if you're going to do a long drive."

I had to do exactly that on several cross-country drives (2800 miles in 3 days) in my totally stock 1989 328! ;)
Definitely too loud for me in extended cabin time at highway speeds.

The radio is good around town or while in the driveway doing whatever car work. It is not useful on the highway. Noise cancelling headphones work great...earplugs too. I don't think using headphones is legal while driving...

Check the air filter / air box is all correctly installed eg the lids tight and sealed . The genuine filters from Superperformance arn’t the cheapest btw .

On my 76 Euro, I can’t hear the exhaust as the carbs overpower any exhaust sound. The euro versions are the most raw, no sound insulation in the air box itself resulting in a great noise coming through the passenger side air inlet. There is insulation in the cabin covering the rear firewall behind the carpeting. But you are correct, there are a variety of sounds coming from the carbs, exhaust, engine, gearbox with the 308, especially the earlier versions. Add the smell of the leather and fuel with the various sounds and you have something that is really special to drive!

Tire or other road noise? Bad wheel bearings can give a god-awful hum whose source isn’t readily apparent, but having had the car gone-through, you’d expect something like that to be noticed. <shrug>
