What is the name of the infection (SpyAxe, SpySheriff, etc.). Symptoms? Adaware works good, but it did not protect me from the above. The more info you can post, the better help you can get, and the sooner.

Try Ewido...I hear a guy at work used that instead of Adaware and it helped when Adaware couldn't. If nothing else, you got nothing to lose..

    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

What are the symptoms you are getting?

    That's a bit drastic - surely a re-install will cure this?
I am no expert but this is what I did (more accurately - got someone else to do) when I had problems of this nature.

Do you have a System Restore Date?

Know what you're doing before you proceed, 'cause baby. if you set a date now... *ouch.* Always hated it when the kid (22) would try to "fix" the problem before I got home or woke up.

The reason I use dial-up now is because when I was on DSL, my wife's son regularly took the liberty of going to sites he ought not to for cheap thrills. This means I don't have to reload my damn system from scratch every few months.

What you need to do 1st is get an anti-spyware utility (McAffee, Adaware or Norton) and install it on your system.

    2. Go to Control Panel and open "Internet Properties"
    3. Select the "Advanced" tab
    4. Scroll down a bit and look for "Enable Install On Demand (Other)", uncheck that.
    5. Click on apply > ok
    6. Disable your "System Restore"
    7. Run the anti-spyware utility.
    8. Restart your PC
    9. Check if you still have the spyware.
    10. If its clean, enable your "system Restore"

Also, did you download a toolbar or anything before you got the spyware?

try reinstalling op and if that doesn't work reformatting the HD is next step if all the above procedures don't work. Happened to me a while back and had to reformat. After you do all that get al the anti-programs and update and keep current.

If all else fails, buy a Mac.
I have never had a virus or spyware issue.
    (not that it couldn't happen)

Use Avast Antivirus For home....once you download it, its constantly monitoring your system, and alerts u if your on a website infected or can infect you with a virus. Also it has a built in virus scanner that works really well. another good one is lavasoft adware. hope that hepls.....ohh and also both of them are free.

Ok, thanks guys. I had to try and find the windows disk first..finally found it and reformated it. There was like a seperate "section" on my hard drive that was 38 mb..thats probably where the spy wear was. Its all running better now..definitly getting some sort of anti virus program.

I wouldn't even connect to the internet until you have installed some sort of protection - I was told recently by some geeky type technical person that on average an unprotected pc will be infected with 14 minutes of connecting up to the web...

sage advice. When I did mine, I downloaded all updates as quick as I could, then disconnected from the Internet and then installed everything. Since then (a couple of years ago) haven't had any problems.
Make sure you have anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware, anti-adware,etc, you can't be too protected or cautious.

Installing all this software does not actually stop your pc being infected with spyware, malware, adware and viruses. It merely slows your pc down to such an extent that it is difficult to know whether you have a virus or not:D
