After getting my car back from the bodywork and respray, I've been noticing some electrical issues. The alternator went bad and was upgraded and the regulator replaced. But I was still blowing fuses with my running lights. Since I don't drive much at night, especially now with the longer days, it wasn't an immediate concern. I also noticed no reverse light. And my horn wasn't working.

Then I noticed a few days ago that my ammeter was showing a discharge, even while I was revving the engine. I thought, "DAMN!!!", not again!!! So I dropped the car off once again. Now I get a call from the shop saying that the wiring harness is pretty hacked up. "HACKED UP???!!!". I was too busy at work at the time to think things thru. They mentioned replacing the wiring harness and would give me a quote on Monday.

It's now Saturday and it hits me...they didn't notice the harness when all the body work was being done???!!! I also had the dash recovered so they must have noticed the condition of the harness then. I'm going to ask them this exact point come Monday. I'm just really frustrated right now. I had hoped to join in on FDC's driving event this weekend. And my girl and I were looking forward to an FOC driving event next weekend.

Sorry, I just had to vent a bit.

    Sucks!!

Certainly, if they had the car apart, especially with electrical issues before, it should have occured to think about the wiring harness.

Complete harness from Superformance is about $900 Ferrari UK is about $3K.

Give 'em hell. At least, negotiate a discount for the work that they should have caught in the first place.

This used to happen to me all the time. I'd have one thing done on my car and almost every time something new would happen when I got the car back. What's with these mechanics anyway??

Upgrading the wiring is always a great thing on these kinds of cars but the labor will put a kid through college. It's one of the biggest PITA jobs one can do. I feel your pain!

I had a similar problem last year- the fuses were blowing on the ignition circuit and the car would misfire and the ammeter was showing discharge - even after upgrading the alternator. It turned out that the insulation had gone from the alternator heat shield and this was flapping around and wasshorting against the connections on the back of the alternator.

I found the problem in the middle of the campsite at Le Mans last year and in the absence of any real spares - rebuilt the fuse with some domestic fusewire! Ran perfectly after the heatshield was removed!

Let me guess, a short in the system somewhere?
These can be a bugger to track down.

Any time anyone plays with the car they will screw something up. If you dont check, no one will. Alternator wiring is especially touchy. I put a fuse panel on the rear bulkhead with a 50 A link for output and 5 A fuse for field. Wires to alternator are about 18" long and are tied to coolant line so contact with exhaust is impossible. Has worked for last 15 years.

So that's how you've been able to keep her running so long. :)

as I said, the problem was the heat shield shorting against the connection points on the back of the alternator. Since that was sorted it has run perfectly.
