To anyone contemplating whether or not to mod their 308, after I installed a turbo in mine it kind of became an ongoing project. It went through 3 turbo upgrades, an addition of an air/water intercooler,2 haltechs, now a motec. the first Centerforce clutch lasted 16 years ( relined once) @ 440lbs TQ. in which I was maxing out the 60 E compressor all on 93 octane fuel.I have since upgraded to a T66, bigger valves, custom cams, motec, more compression, porting, twindisc clutch w/lightweight flywheel. I have not dynoed yet but at 14lbs boost it pulls away from 360's like it missed a shift! 4000 rpm to 8000 rpm in fifth is like second gear Still need to iron out the maps to 20 lbs just for fun. Still drives like a stocker, does 210 miles on a tankful and has never overheated. Here are a few pics.

    Very impressive!
What size valves did you use and could you tell me a bit about the porting and cam specs? - I am thinking of doing that as well.
    Many thanks!

I like the part about wasting 360s!

Very very nice! More pictures please.

I have a 77GTB with an intercooled supercharger setup and Electromotive TEC3r ECU so I'm always particularly interested in other boosted 308s.

Did you upgrade the pistons or shave the heads to gain more compression? Stock pistons? Do you know what your CR is? No knock?

    How are you intercooling?

What in particular did you do about porting? Porting and possibly bigger valves is something I'm contemplating for the next step upwards.

Outside of the clutch, have you found any weak points in the car's drivetrain?

    Very cool!

We need some way of boosting the power on carb'd cars. Unfortunately, it seems the only way is the old fashioned way (cams, valves & pistons). And, 300 hp seems to be the realistic ceiling with these mods.

You could boost a carbed car, but the potential for trouble could be far greater. The part that would scare me would be a leaking, flooding, or overflowing carb (stuck flloat?). Could get messy real fast with the inside of the carb being pressurised.

What about an old school Hilborne style injection system? Wouldnt that be far simpler, cheaper, and more reliable?

Like a lot of race car equipment, Hilborn FI would probably be awful on the street. I had it on a Chevy V8 powered race car back in the early seventies and nailing the throttle was like getting kicked in the **s as long as you kept the RPM up. Who cared about having no power under 4000 RPM and how it might behave under street conditions?! I don't think MSD spark advace control existed yet. We had to manually retard the timing every time the engine was started and then advance it again to have power!

The nice thing about boosting is that you DON'T need redical cams and high compression and extreme ignition advance. These are all things that detract from enjoyable street driving. My supercharged 308 behaves like kitten in slow traffic and becomes a tiger when I want it to with no stumbling or complaints. It's a smooth transition from a nice idle to scorching the pavement.

    Henry,
All these superchargers and turbos are just attempts to make the injected cars as cool as the carb cars. You can feel secure that the sound alone of your carb car, along with the throttle response gives your car something the boosted cars will never have. (And they have something we will never have: POWER!)

It's simple, just buy a cheapie 308 2Vi on ebay for $17K and drop a SC in it. That can be your beater 308. ;)

I am using custom forged JE pistons .020 over in O ringed sleeves and copper headgaskets.Heads are milled, valve guides were made for me from manganese bronze and are O ringed on the O.D.w/viton seals. So my oil stays in the crankcase where it belongs.Compression is 10.5:1 which gives me great off boost torque. As far as throttle response and sound, Motec SFI, properly sized and positioned injectors, twin MSD CDI, 18lb clutch/flywheel, un-muffled wastegate 3.5in downpipe and blow-off valve sounds like an Indy car and revs like a Gixxer.I rebuilt the trans in 89 before all the mods with new bearings, syncros and 2nd gear which apparently are more prone to wear also a new ZF diff. and never looked back.

    Wow. 10.5:1 compression WITH boost???

What kind of fuel are you using?

I try to keep it topped up to 93 octane. Does not knock.Still need to bring it up to 20lbs or so. We'll see what happens, the trick is to keep intake temps down. The highest inlet temps so far is 135 degs, sustained wot. I run cheap Bosch copper plus plugs that cracks its insulator then slides down to effectively shut down that particular cylinder. My new turbo is better suited to my current expectations so I am at about 73% comp eff. which produces boost quicker at 30000rpm less and lowering heat build-up.
