I just returned from a 600 mile 3 day trip to the Detroit area for a car weekend. First long trip in the 90' 348. The car ran great but I discovered a few things about the car. The A/C is weak and can't cool the cabin in 85 degree temps so it was windows down the whole way. I kept getting a "Check Engine 5-8" on and off the whole weekend. Also hard to start when engine hot. It cranks and tries to fire but it take 2 or 3 attempts. And the seats made my ass numb after about 2 hrs of seat time. The seats were so uncomfortable that I stopped on the way home at Summit Racing outside of Akron, OH to look at the Sparco and Corbeau seats!

Saturday morning was a local cars and coffee, then we spent the afternoon driving all sorts of italian cars at my brother's place. He just purchased a 250 GTE that our father owned from 1973 to 1975. Here's a link to the story on the Hagerty site.

His collection also includes a Lancia Delta Integrale, Ferrari 328, Alfetta sedan, 58 Giulietta, 3.0L GTV-6. Three other family members brought their new Giulias, 2 TI's and a quadrifoglio. And lastly was my father's 64 Ferrari 250 Lusso that was entered in the Councours d'Elegance at St. John's on Sunday and was awarded a blue ribbon.

Saturday night was my brothers 4th annual Cars In My Yard. He's head of Buick design and invited over 100 guests to bring their cars for beers, BBQ and White Castle burgers. Here's a link to last year's event.

Yes, fantastic story and great pics. Awesome story about that 250 GTE too.

Regarding the seats, I find the seats to be amazing--even for long distances. I wonder if you'd prefer the later 348 seats?

I'm not crazy about my seats, either (91 348). Not enough thigh support, so all your weight is on your ass. I think the problem is the seat bottoms don't tilt back. I might fabricate a couple of wedges or spacers to put under the seat rails to get the seats tilted back.

Your hot start problem is almost certainly from the clutch; it just needs to be repacked. Kluber Grease leaks out and gets onto the crank position sensors. This interferes with the start process in exactly the way you describe and it's far worse when the engine is hot.

Your 91 probably still has the early seats in it. I bet there's quite a difference...

I should clarify that I had two different starting issues, both when the car is warm. One is turn the key and lights go on but no starter when turning the key, nothing, no click, no dimming of lights. Try two or three times and then it will crank. I assume that would be the crank sensor you are referring to?

The second issue is when the car is real hot, after stopping to get gas and the car is off for only a few minutes. It cranks fine, fires a little bit but doesn't fully fire up. Kind like if it had carbs and needed a few pumps of the throttle, just not quite enough gas. Again, after one or two tries it catches and all is well.

Yes no thigh supper whatsoever, Also the lateral hip bolsters are rock hard and just a tad bit too narrow for me. I'd like to see the later model seats. I'm leaning to aftermartket because I actually like clothe seats better. My only question is about the lap belt. I believe it is integral to the stock seat bottom. I'd have to find a location to mount an aftermarket belt. Not a lot of room for recoil type belt.

OK. Seems as if you're having two separate, but very common problems. The stumble-start is the Kluber Grease. The dead-starter problem is something many of us have solved by installing an aftermarket relay in the engine bay. I can't remember the exact directions and I'm not at my desk right now. If you search for starting relay in the 348 forum I think you'll find it. Chances are also good that it's written up in the famous www.my348.com site.

Thanks for the info and leads. I figured it was 2 separate issues. I put the car on the lift when I got home and presently have the exhaust off to install test pipes and replace/delete the mufflers. If I need access to the starter area to install a relay now is the time. I need to order new gaskets for the test pipes as two of mine are cracked. I will also use this opportunity to clean and degrease the transaxle area. I wasn't planning on having the car down during the summer driving season so I hope to get the parts in and installed soon.

That sounds about right to me. After 2 hours in my 348 I get uncomfortable, especially my left knee. In stock form it sure is not a grand touring car.
