So I tried my first oil change on Friday.. wasn't that bad... except that I forgot to remove and drain the tranny plug and the oil strainer in the tranny. :-(
For whatever reason my brain had it understanding that the tranny oil is separate from the engine oil.. :-(

Oh well.. have a new filter on it and will have to do a new complete change this spring for summer..

Not a bad experience at all. Only difference between the 360 and my Boxster is the silly undertray is a bit of a pain to remove. I can't understand why you'd pay a few hundred to have it done.. And I did it on ramps like a redneck.. ;-)

I don't know what you are thinking!!
The engine oil and the tranny oil are completely separated systems!
The engine oil do have two drain plugs and the tranny have one.

A man called a TV repair man when his television broke.

The repairman came to the home, looked all over the TV, and then pulled out a rubber hammer from his bag. He hit the TV in the side with the rubber hammer and it started to work again. The owner of the TV was very happy.

The repairman gave the bill to the TV owner. It said "repair TV -- $200".

The man said: "I'm not paying for this! You only hit the TV with a hammer!!! I want an itemized bill!".

The repairman wrote out another bill. It said "Hitting TV with a hammer: $1. Knowing where to hit the TV: $199".

David that was what I thought! I undid the front drain plug, replaced it, and held off on the rear tranny drain plug.
Thank you. I am not going crazy.. I thought the clutch and its housing prevented this (no continuous channel).

    Thank you.

The only thing that confused me was that I know there is about 1 liter residual in the system (other posts).. Therefore I added about 6 quarts of oil (1 quart approx = to 0.946 Liters) to start. I know the system has approx. 8-9 Liters capacity..

I found I over filled it and sucked out 1.5 quarts (syringe and vinyl tubing work wonders) before the level was acceptable.
This discrepancy was what led me to think that there was another source within the tranny. She runs fantastic now.

BDelp.. funny. :) As always gentlemen.. thank you for the feedback. Live and learn.. :)

    Curt,
When I change the motor oil I only insert like 7.5 liters of oil first. The last amount of oil will be added with the engine running and when I barely can touch the oil canister cap. It works very well and I'm making sure not bubbles or foaming affect my readings.

    David,

I actually read your other posts on adding oil... was just interesting to me that I didn't even get the 7 quarts in.. I overfilled on 5.5.

    Was interesting.

Am getting good pressure and fill should be fine but I will keep monitoring level. I always worry about oil starvation in these motors.

Thanks for giving your experiences in DIY ferrari repair. It def. helps diagnosing and healing my "patient".. :)

You have a 1999 360 and your only adding 5.5qts of fresh oil after draining the oil pan and sump and replacing an oil filter? I think something is not being done properly. Do you have a shop manual that you can reference? I would take a second look before damage is done

The plug under the sump ("A" in the workshop manual) I removed and drained. There is a plug "B" under the transmission housing that I did NOT remove and drain. I suspect this is why I had under the 9 quarts. It is this plug "B" on the transmission housing that I was confused was the transmission fluid or engine oil.

It seemed that the workshop manual endorsed both transmission fluid and engine fluid replacement at the same time. I only wanted to change engine oil. I'll do both in the spring.
