Barn finds are great. Be cautious, and I hope you can do most of the work. I recently bought a black 308 that was suppose to be in top condition. So far I'm into repairs for about $8000. These 308s can be costly if you have a professional do the work. Most of that $8 grand was labor, and parts are not cheap. But I think it's well worth it, the 308 is a great car. Hope all goes well for you.

I have rebuilt my shocks - it's very straightfoward (if you've rebuilt mountain bike, or motocross shocks, you'll feel right at home with these).

I don't think Koni offers rebuild kits, but it really isn't necessary. If you measure the shafts, if they're like mine, they'll actually be in inch size (9/16" if I remember correctly) and there's plenty of industrial seals available. I went with a "WV" packing style (made by Hercules Seal) instead of the plain rubber washers-style Koni used. Also used AW32 hydraulic oil. That and some new bushings, spring pads and paint and they'll be like new.

Cool! I don't think I've seen anyone on this board do that before. Do you have the part numbers you used? They should be added to the 308 parts list 'sticky'...

I suppose you're talking about the WV packing seals? If so...

I made a mistake. I checked my invoice and they were 5/8" size. In any case, per shock absorber, you need two of these:

    851-0.62X1.12 (http://www.herculescn.com/home.php?cat=1051)

    And one of these:

    853-0.62X1.12 (http://www.herculescn.com/home.php?cat=1053)

Read these instruction pages on how to install them properly:

Well I am now to the point of putting the engine back in...not looking foward to it, but really excited to be the first to hear it run after so long. I ended up installing new head gaskets, valve stem seals and of course all top end gaskets. I spent alot of time blasting and cleaning both engine bay and engine but I think the extra work will pay off in the end. I will continue to keep posting pics of the process but should be firing it up in a matter of days if all goes well.

Thank you for posting the information about the seals for the shocks...I envy you alone for the time you've been able to put into this project, and you just got it...about a month ago was it?! The same amount of work would take me forever...

The reason it looks so high is that of course it has no engine in it making the back look high and after spending some time with it I noticed all 4 shocks were locked up so after putting it on jack stands to do some work on it and setting it back down....it didn't want to go back down :) I will either try rebuilding the shocks or just replace them.

The day has finally come to see if she go's or blows! After 30 years she GO'S!!!!! Took a few minutes for the smoke to clear but I let it idle for 45mins checking for leaks and any cooling, oil pressure, or fuel delivery problems and all is good. I set the timing, sync'ed and tuned the carbs and she idles and revs up perfectly with no issues that I see thus far so now I am really excited to proceed on with the project!

I envy you (in a good way) on so many levels it isn't even funny. It's so nice to see a regular car guy come out on top for a change instead of some snob who just wants a garage queen. I'd kill to have your skills, man, this is the best thread I've seen here in a long time.
