well, my family and i just switched from spring to t-mobile, and after getting a little bit screwed over (pardon the expression) on the t-mobile dash, i settled on the blackberry pearl. so far, i've enjoyed it. it's definitely different than my previous phone which pretty much had a camera as the only added extra. so, here's my list of pro's and cons:

    pros:
lots of fun stuff to play around with
ability to sync with my computer
    voice quality
    bluetooth
    music player
    games
    ability to get stuff online
    maps
it was FREE! can't beat that.

    cons:
difficulty of texting, the buttons are too small and too close together (this is the biggest drawback for me, i used to be able to send a text within a few seconds, but now it takes me at least a minute to send out the easiest of texts because the wrong letters keep coming up)
the feeling that it is incredibly fragile
i need to buy a memory card (not really a bad thing, but just another out of pocket expense for me)
paying for internet (i haven't done this yet, i'm going to try to cut a deal with t-mobile to let me try it out for free for a month to see if i'll actually use it enough and with enough ease to justify the 30 some-odd bucks a month extra)

well, there you have it. i still have a lot to get used to, and it'll take time, but i think i'll learn to enjoy this phone. not to say that i won't stop looking at dash's on ebay...

Have had one for about a month now and it is great - and as you have found it did take some time getting used to text input (the onboard help file is worth reading). After a couple of days (and reading instructions) I am now much quicker than I was on my previous Nokia and the predictive text also seems to learn unlike simpler handsets.

    Enjoy it!
