Went out to start the car, turned the key, and my ears only heard silence, no whirring of the fuel pump down in back. After pulling the whole filter pump assembly I found I still had the original 35 year old BCD pump. Not wanting to change to a modern choice if I didn't have to, I disassembled it and found carbon caked on the armature which probably kept it from spinning up easily. Also noticed a broken brush spring retainer on one side. Managed to clean it all, fix the spring and put it back together. Guess what, it actually worked. I was surprised too. No telling about the reliability of the repairs, but I'm going to give it a try and see what happens. If it fails in a month or two, I'll fess up, and probably go buy a Pierburg. I also had a broken rubber vibration isolation mount. While I couldn't find anything like them anywhere locally, they were readily available in the exact same size and thread from www.vibrationmounts.com I've attached two photos for the reference library. One with the BCD apart, and one with the completed assembly ready to go back into the car. I hope it holds, the assembly looked pretty good. ----------------- J.R. You did well, I would have thought that after all those years that the motor would have at least required new brushes. Having said that I wonder if they are available, anyone know! Personally i wouldnt trust a pump of that age and even though i stripped mine and rebuilt it (brushes wer still good) I did'nt fit it back on the car and instead fitted a Facet pump from Superformance. Whilst i like originallity i also like piece of mind! and whats more it's not something thats readily on display on the car. G P
Can you tell me what size the fibre washers for both inlet and outlet on the fuel filter,(looking at your pics)thought I would have them on hand when I fix my fuel leak.
Since it was solidly assembled with no leaks, and was clean as a whistle inside, I did not remove the two fittings. That way I didn't risk the washers, and didn't look for replacements. Sorry I couldn't help. ------ J.R.
