    Unfortunately, I don't sprecken ze German language, so I was hoping you gents could help me out. Here is an interview with Franco Cimatti (page 2), concept engineering manager at Ferrari (think FXX) and I'd like to get a jist of what he says in the interview. Translating the entire document would be too much, so if anyone could give me a basic understanding of what he's saying, I would really appreciate it... Since it's a PDF document, I can't copy the text and paste it into a translator, otherwise I would just do that...

    innovationSpirit: How does it create Ferrari, innovations from the experiences with the formula the 1 was won to convert also in the production of series cars?

Thus I could use directly the experience of the pilots and the Formel-1-Techniker, who ensured in the course of the time for perfecting the steering element. In another case one of my colleagues from the Formel-1-Team with a problem within the range of the clutch contacted me. He knew that I had concerned myself in the past with the development of clutches for road vehicles. It is a constant mutual exchange, which flows in projects, which will show up different working groups to cover and their results in the new models of Ferrari.

    innovationSpirit: Ferrari does not rank with a production output of any more than 4,000 cars per year among the "David's" motorring industry. How does it create your enterprise under the "Goliaths" of the automobile industry e.g. DaimlerChrysler to become generally accepted? Which role plays thereby innovation?
    Franco Cimatti: As Ferrari we draw a large advantage from the constant operational readiness level in racing. This manufactures also a strong emotional connection between Ferrari and its customer. It is however of fundamental importance that the GT vehicles high expectations of our customers become fair. The elements, those particularly for strengthening the relationship with our customers contribute are predominantly emotional nature. Some capability characteristics are presupposed, so e.g. engine performance, handling, style; but it is also important to surprise with each new model. Here innovation plays a fundamental role: engine performance must grow with expectations, the driving feeling must one ever more strongly becoming connection between the driver and the car obtain. Our small size of company, our tradition relating to crafts, paired with most modern technology and short decision ways put us into the position, very fast from the idea to their practical conversion in a new model to arrive.

    innovationSpirit: What do you say to innovation? What is innovation for you? Franco Cimatti: To be able itself to place to look and fast from the idea to the practical conversion arrive new challenge to surprise itself to be content never always forward over understand whether the hit way is the correct.

    innovationSpirit: What does one have to consider, if one wants to convert innovation successfully in the enterprise? What are success factors for innovation in the enterprise in the future?
    Franco Cimatti: Innovation must be carried as idea of all coworkers, only by the integration of all creates one the conversion of the most unbelievable and most original ideas. Prototypes to build, is actually no problem; however surprises can result in the case of the assumption of the innovations into series production. Then it is important that the entire staff believes in the feasibility.

    innovationSpirit: What means success for you personally? What were the most important stations in your career and which experiences could you forward from it carry for you?
    Franco Cimatti: That is question, which brings me in embarrassment. I try to employ above all me with things, which inspire me and to which I believe. It is beautiful to experience that this by other humans is appreciated. Which concerns the most important stations of my life, then I can say that everything which one experiences, on which or other way experiences save, which coin/shape one. Surely the years at the university in the United States, where my family had pulled from vocational reasons of my father, gave me the very American possibility of connecting the theory with practice. But I found that also here with Ferrari, when I mean activity within the range of the manufacturing of prototypes began and here both the planning of prototypes, and their road fitness test pursued.

    innovationSpirit: How do you deal with failures?
    Franco Cimatti: Here the old saying applies "from errors learns one" to me.

    Franco Cimatti: I never decided for an individual slogan, on the contrary I try to deal with each situation specifically.

    This, of all threads, I did not expect to be funny...

    ...but it is...! You guys are a riot...! :)

    Wolfgang, thank you so much for the translation - it's more than adequate and it's really useful for me. I have a shot at interviewing Mr. Cimatti in April when he comes over here for a local car show and I wanted to familiarize myself with his thoughts and ideas so I have a better understanding of what kind of questions to ask him. This was a great help, thank you.


    As an aside, you Europeans can sure handle your own with the English language. You sprecken ze English a lot better than I could ever sprecken ze Dutch... :)
