At home all day, roomie at work. Go to eye exam at 1:30pm, get home one hour later. Walk in the house, put down some OJ I bought, then go to my room to check the market action on my laptop. Hey, where is my laptop??? Walk into kitchen where I can see the back door splintered and kicked in. ****! Grab pool cue from 5ft away and then make my way back to the front door to call police. From what we know they stole two laptops. That means all of my work related stuff, private docs saved on laptop, my roommate's laptop with 1 year's worth of work. Bot computers not backed up(don't tell me, I get it). Stole 2 of my watches, a digital camera, and other small electronics. They even took a duffle bag out of a closet(probably to stuff the goods into). And the funniest item they took? TUB of quarters!!!! They left the Xbox360 and the 35in plasma HDTV. Morons. I wouldn't even be surprised if they bolted upon hearing me pull up and begin to unlock the front door. Cops came, called two people to come in and see if they can dust for prints. They come in, inspect, and claim they can't. Upon inspecting a door that the 'experts' looked over, my roommate notices an OBVIOUS hand print from someone's dirty hands. Then cops write report, leave. As soon as they leave we discover the perp's cellphone!!! Not working after trying to poke the on button with a pen so as not to taint the evidence. Been waiting 3 hours for police to show back up. Luckily I just rent. And to think my car was keyed in the driveway 3 weeks ago, a few months ago my cousin's F250 was broken into and stereo stolen. The landlord waited until after today's drama to let us know that their car was stolen out of the driveway. And after talking to neighbors, one of their places got broken into on Friday!!! Needless to say I am out of this place STAT. Updates to follow...using a friend's laptop. PISSED. Now, we didn't have renter's ins.... So that makes those losses unrecoverable, no?
Ouch, I hope things turn out well for you John. I haven't been in any similar circumstances so I don't know what to tell ya.
John, dude, sorry to hear that man. I hope they catch the pricks who did this. If there's anything I can help with, or you need anything, please let me know.
Still waiting on police to come back. Original call was at 2:36pm, they were here by around 3pm. 2nd call at 5pm, still waiting.... Funny, the pool cue is still in my front yard. So ridiculous.
You: "Someone broke into my house" Police: "we'll be there in 30 minutes." You: "I just shot an intruder in my house." Police: "We'll be there in five minutes." Sucks dude. I just had a fit of anxiety as I couldn't find my wallet all day. Called stores I went to last night, scoured car, office, etc. It was alongside my bed, must have been sitting on the sheets with my socks and belt, etc. when my wife made the bed this AM. Hopefully the cellphone wasn't stolen too. Do you have homeowners'/renter's insurance?
On the phone they asked me, "Is the intruder still in the house?" Me: " F!!K if I know, I was inside for thirtys seconds and am now standing in my front yard with a pool cue!!!" We figure the phone was stolen. But who knows. As for ins, the landlord has homeowner's, but we don't have renter's. Our suspicions are that it was the people who mow the lawn. Our landlord got in an arguement with them yesterday and threatened to not pay them for services. They cut the lawn today. And a month ago I walked in the house and got the feeling someone had been inside. I then noticed a glass sliding door ajar by a slight amount. And if I remember correctly they had cut the grass that day as well. Might explain the smudge handprint STILL on a door 10ft from me right now. Hmmm, I just cut some grass, maybe my hands are dirty! They also stole a pair of my friends Nike's. Nice ones. And next to the perp's cellphone(propped on a fridge) lay unidentified sandals. Meaning they took the sandals off, balanced a hand on the fridge(leaving the cell phone there)and put on the new kicks. Arrrgh
I know! I was supposed to drive to Ft. Worth tomorrow and was looking to see what you crazy bastards were up to! Now I get to find a new place to live. But depending on how things pan out, I will hopefully make the drive sometime soon(maybe 3-5 days at most). Keeping fingers crossed.
I would be willing to bet a lot of money its someone you know, most likely a friend of your roomates. And yes I know his was stolen too, doesn't matter.
The police came back, same officer. I have to give her credit because she was extremely methodical, honest about the situation, and very pleasant. They couldn't send out crimelab again because of a shooting they were investigating. So we took the phone, cracked open the back, placed simm card in another phone, and looked to see when the last messages were. Sept 2005! DOH! No trace of the lawn company's number. Stolen phone, clearly. And just when I thought I was going to get a reality TV show being a crack detective... Maybe tomorrow I will see if I can take a pic of the handprint. But it may not come out well because I have to use my phone to take the pic. No digital camera!
Doubtful, he is a public school teacher of 6-8th grade students. And I have known my roomate since freshman year in college and we all know each other's friends. Roomate is a clean cut guy who doens't associate with anyone who would associate themselves with shady folks. With the rebuilding in New Orleans there are A LOT of contractor groups and workers that get the chance to scope things out.
Sorry to hear of your problems. I would make some attempts to get someone to try and get that handprint. Maybe talk to the DA or go up the chain with the PD. If they don't get a match on the print then maybe they will talk to the gardeners. Whoever stole the stuff may still have some of it. When my stuff got stolen from my car St. Tammany sheriffs found the people and found that they had stashed my stuff under their house.
I'm sorry to hear that. I was pissed when my iPod, car hookup, wallet and altoids got stolen from my car, I would imagine a lap top with work related stuff is much worse. I hope they find the low-lifes who did this, and you get everything back in line soon....
John thats truly sucks I had the same happen just under 2 years ago, they took all my electronics, DVDs, bunch of personal stuff and even most of my kids toys. They then demolished the inside of my house that I just remolded. Cops refused to dust for prints or even investigate witnesses
F**k i hate when that happens..Im so sorry for your losses, its a horrible feeling isnt it:-( I sometimes wounder what the worlds coming to.. and leaving the phone, the plasma tv and the xbox? wtf!! last time we were broken, my dad lost all his tools given to him by his father before he passed away from lukemia.. tools that you cant buy these days. Tools that held sentimental value.. I really felt for my dad because those tools were the last things he had to remember his father by.. We've a security system installed now, and no-one goes near our house now so might be worth investigating a security system? All the best!
Always have an alarm system. In todays world any creep can stroll in and take your stuff. In florida if you are home and they break in "If you feel threathened" Then woo is them...... AS they say "God created man, Sam Colt made thrm all equal"
uuuuugggghhhh. I would so hate it if anyone stole my laptop. It is somewhat backed up ... but they could easily take the external HD that everything is on as well. Anything is replaceable, but work and years worth of personal pictures ... crap, I really feel for ya, man! Dunno what to say other than I'm glad I have a 120lbs black dog that scares the crap out of any stranger (but don't tell anyone he's just a big teddy bear).
