Plus if youre looking for something to share with your kids, starting them too early could cause them to lose interest quickly. I did TKD for several years, and throughout those years I always saw kids that started young and after a few months never came back. That or the first time they got disciplined or hit hard they didn't want to come back. Just something to think about. I'm definately not trying to tell you to do one thing or another, nobody knows your kids and whats best for them more than you.

Instead of taking the rejection as a personal insult, reflect on the bigger picture. Every business operates within the supply/demand model. I would venture to say that the shop has probably had 4.5 year olds before and has found them to difficult students. Instead of having a stead fast rule age of say 6, they are willing to consider advanced 4.5 year olds when business is slow. Since it appears that at this moment the school has a waiting list, they have the ability to be more selective in who they admit. Why take a 4.5 year old that acts like a 4.5 year old when there are plenty of easier to teach 6 year olds seeking the same opening? I really do not believe the teacher gave your child any further thought than "ahhh, this could turn into a PIA".

Slightly off topic here, but I could not help but notice your avatar.

My wife used to run hospitality for MTP Program, and the marketing kiosks for Marlboro at IRL races. Then we had a baby and she is taking some time off.

This is here with Helio at Indy in '02.

jimpo1, What you've posted doesn't surprise me a bit. Again and again and again, I read/hear of educators (teachers and administrators) who proclaim this, that, and the other (as if they were God), and it all turns out exactly the opposite.

My son started TKD at age 3-1/2. It's an ATA school that has a "Little Dragons" class. It's a half hour long, which is about as long as the little kids' attention span. My son LOVED it from day-one. It's more than a year later (he turns 5 in June), and he's still going 3 days a week. He's advanced to a "Little Dragons" green belt. As long as he enjoys it, we'll keep taking him.

And, guess what... He STILL can't do jumping jacks! He just jumps up and down, feet together, hands flapping in the air.

    Go figure.

yea, i mentioned this thread to a good friend of mine, a 3rd degree black belt in TKD who teaches down here in SC, he pretty much said the same thing. a child that young probably just doesnt have the motor skills or attention span. i mean i coach soccer to kids that young and getting them to kick a soccer ball is hard enough
