The only air cooled I have ever driven was a 1976 Targa. My mom had it for a short time and I loved it.

I owned a 1993 964 C4, but? I think the best 911 to actually own & drive would be the 3.2 Carrera years, if you're a purist. Otherwise, I'd sure love a 993.

As far as nicer, I like the 964s, but I think all the air-cooled Porsches are a unique, classic sports car experience. I know a 992 is "better", but to me it's all about the sense of occasion with the older cars. Same reason I still love the 328.

 

Beautiful car Albert! These ‘86 had the fog lights integrated into the front apron, nice styling advance. Love the color.

Hey, my "ideal," to just go for "purity," would be a 1972 911 S, with the oil filler on the outside!

Perhaps more practical, I'd go with the 3.2 series - a bit more "oomph," I kinda like/prefer that period's front & rear bumpers, and that era had pressure fed cam tensioners, with no issue of exploding airboxes.

964 era? CLOSE to classic looks, but not quite there, and you still have to do the valves. If you have a C4? Just gonna say - if the hydraulic pressure switch goes out? ZERO hydraulics are ported, to operate the brakes, and? No matter what anybody says - they do NOT just act like "fully manual brakes" at that point - you can put 200+ pounds of pressure on that pedal, and it is NOT gonna give much braking effect.

993? Lost a LOT (almost all) of the "hand built," and the physical look changed a LOT! Though? No more messing with the valves... Would LOVE to have a 993 C4S (with the wide body, in whatever their dark green color was, with tan/cork interior!)

 

I had a 993 cabriolet, and when I started the hunt for a 911 last year I was initially looking for a 993 coupe. But the right 964 C2 came along, and after initially passing on it, I actually changed my mind. Put a deposit on it, and came to prefer that generation. I still like the 993, but it did lose the iconic silhouette up front.

As far as the 1972 or other long hood LWB 911s, they are definitely vintage at this point, but I drove a 1973 911T and really enjoyed it. The ergonomics aren’t all that much worse than the ‘74-‘89 cars, but the lightness, mechanical character and quality are there at every interaction. Even the 356s are impressive, but the early 911s stand out to me as one of the very few cars of the era that holds its own in modern traffic. Very old, yes, but really good.

Looks like an ‘87 with the G50 gearbox. Maybe registered as an ‘86 in Italy? Beautiful combination!

 

Reason I mentioned it, it looked like it had the larger torsion bar cover on the side. I love both. The 915 gearbox is about 70 Lbs/32 Kgs lighter.
