    Hi Gang!

Well after 8 months searching the truck brought my 80 308 GTSI. There is a little oil leak I need to figure out. But the Idle speed is around 2100 rpm. My car was tuned for high Altitudes of New Mexico and I'm in San Diego. I was told it would be running lean. I'm waiting for my book "How to Tune and Modify Bosch Fuel Injection" By Watson.

    1) What should the Idle RPMs be? 1000?

    2) Had a nice drive around the countryside. What products should I use to keep it clean? Not a complete detailing, but like putting a horse back after a ride. For the body and the 16" wheels? Do you guys like the powerball polisher? Also the engine is spotless. What should I do to keep this up?

I do have some of the workshop manuals in PDF, and my project is to get them all printed out. Here are a couple of pics...

Yes the rpm should be 1000 +/- 100
and the adjuster is the big screw under the throtlebody, clockwise to reduce rpm.

    Congrats on your purchase!

Stop on by, meet my boss Gary Bobileff, and maybe we will be able to show you how to adjust that idle. Or just come by to look around.

    for directions, check our website:

BEFORE ADJUSTING THE IDLE SCREW- make sure the FLOORMAT ISN'T PUSHING on the GAS PEDAL !- a very common problem with 308's.
p.s. great looking car- congrats !

Completely agree with Steve's prior post about the floor mats (and the rest of the mechanical linkage as the first thing to check), but on your particular model there is a dedicated device to add extra air during cold-running. If your cold idle is the near-same RPM as the warm idle, I'd suspect something wrong in this area. If your cold idle is higher than the warm idle, I'd go after the adjustments. Is your cold idle significantly higher than your (high) warm idle?

    Should be:

Cold idle at start-up -- Highest RPM -- Cold Start Air Valve open and the AAV might be open (depending on temp).

Cold idle after a couple/few minutes, but before the thermoswitch in the coolant tank changes state (closes when warm on a 2Vi IIRC) -- Still a high RPM -- Cold Start Air Valve open, AAV closed.

Warm idle -- 1000 RPM -- Cold Start Air Valve closed and AAV closed.

91tr is right, i removed the GM AAV from mine and left the bosch one inplace. the initial cold start high idle is brutal on the bearings. some bypass the vacume control by jumping the terminals on the coolant overflow tank, or plugging the vacum line on the AAV itself. for me i got rid of the setup alltogether and kept the sensors and solenoids in tack. this keeps the lights on the consol working correctly, you'll have an orange light until up to temp. but the AAV high idle is gone. the std bosch bypass valve still functions correctly.

i had the how to tune book you mention and found it lacking, i sprung for the bently pub bosch book, alot more technical and helps with OEM setups. you'll still need the WSM as bosch let each mfg adjust the setup to thier specs. it helps to have at least a WSM from a few models of the same age. i have the 308, mondi8 and gt4 to cover the gaps you'll find.

read up on the WSM so you can set your idle right. it takes some paitence and you'll need a low value senstive vacuum gauge. i use an old medical one as it is calibrated in the values they state. the biggest mistake made is adjusting the large thumb screw on the TB. that should be nearly closed or closed completly and left alone. the WSM explains the steps.

    Nice car, congrats.
