So angry right now. My temp tag expires today on the M3 I picked up two weeks ago. I called the dealer, Paul Miller BMW in Wayne, Friday looking for my registration and I get the admin who handles titles. She tells me she can't find my paperwork. Call her a second time... she promises to call me back. Doesn't call. I call Saturday and leave a message with my salesman around 10:00am....nothing-no call back from him either. So I get up today and call the dealer. The admin says the GM has to call you back. He calls me about 30 minutes later and tells me how Motor Vehicles "lost" my title and they have left numerous messages but "you know the dmv". Dealer does drop off an 05 BMW 540 but I'm still annoyed that the dealer didn't keep me in the loop on this one-plus the fact that I can't drive my new car.....

Anybody know how long it takes to get a duplicate title issued???? I'm guessing they have to go through the previous owner since he traded the car in on a new car.

IS this NY or NJ? I have used a couple of different services to do title work for me, they seem to get stuff done fast- but getting a duplicate title issued may be another thing. PM me if you get nowhere on this.

Thanks Bill. I haven't even held the title in my hand. I'm guessing -guy traded in the car with the title, I bought the car and paid the dealer a few bucks for a doc fee to register it, dealer either misplaced the title or when they dropped off 10 titles at the DMV to get processed they only left with 9... This is NJ. I have to assume that the dealer is going to most likely have to get the guy who traded the car in to apply for a duplicate title since the dealer lost the original.

Can the dealer not give you another temp tag? This seems like you're erring WAY on the side of the caution.

If they do like we do in Texas you can get a "quick title". It takes the person going to the registration office with proof of purchase, insurance, personal ID and a form from the dealer. Usually the title clerk from the dealership will do this for you. The DMV can trace the history of the vehicle and force the title through. It can be done in 10-15 minutes if you or the title clerk are willing to wait at the window for the DMV clerk to do it. I did it on many lost titles and had no problems at all. Of course, I was in Texas and you are where you are. Things may be different.

You should be able to get another temporary tag that is good for 21 days. In Texas we use red tags for original transfer tags and blue for replacement tags if things are held up more than 21 days from date of purchase.

You haven't been to the NJ DMV. You need to bring your 6th grade teacher, a blood sample and the girl who you lost your virginity to just to re-new your drivers license.

Still another reason I live in Texas...............I can have a renewed license in 5 minutes from the time I get to the desk. I just have to wait in line behind 150 illegal aliens before I get my turn. That is unless I live in Farmers Branch, adjoining Dallas. City council just voted to make English the official language and to make apartment owners and people leasing houses verify that new tenants are not illegals before the can rent to them. Big monetary penalties for renting to an illegal.

Oh, you did not mention a DNA sample......

I so have the feeling something else is going on with my new ride.... I've been dealing with the sales manager the last few days and he claims the DMV lost the title. Got my salesman on the phone and he would not commit to what was going on with the title. I've got a feeling something else is up with my car...

Anyone want to want to guess? I think the car has a lean on it and the dealer doesn't have the title.

Been there...Car has lien, dealer pays off lien, gets title, then titles in your name...gets worse if previous title was not NJ...BTW if by chance you ever have to deal w/their body shop, light the car on fire it will be easier to watch it burn then to deal with those clowns.

    Best,
    Pots

ok, called the dealer today and asked flat out "what is the real story, clearly you guys are hiding something since the GM, Document MGR, and Salesman have all told me a different story. I'm told another dealer wholesaled them the car (so much for the story abou the customer trading the car in for a 5 series the salesman told me), they got the car with the title being "in the mail". Turns out the dealer who wholesaled the car misplaced the title and has been dragging his feet to coordinate with the original owner to get a duplicate title in that dealers name, so then my dealer can get that title and register it in mine name....... I'm told this should all be taken care of by the end of next week-right after this great weather passes me by.

LOL!! So true, I just renewed 2 weeks ago. The most amazing part was of the different proofs of ID they require, YOUR CURRENT driver's license is actually the lowest ranked!!??!?!

so take the car back, and buy one somewhere else. It's not your fault they don't have the title or make damn sure they compensate.

When I was at the DMV the last time, there was a 80 year old woman who had her valid drivers license and was looking for a renewal. Woman at the dek says "do you get a copy of your original birth certificate or marriage license, your drivers license is only one piece of the ID process"-woman looks her in the eye and says "I was born in 1923 do you really think my original birth certificate made it this far. I renewed my license about 20 times in New Jersey doesn't that count for anything on your stupid list" She got a standing ovation......

Yeah, the clerk deserved it because she set the requirements for license renewal.
