I went out and did it and I am having a blast! I picked up this 1995 456 GT in Napa on Wednesday and my buddy and I drove a 12 hour Induro to Seattle. So she looks a little grubby and needs a wash. The car was well maintained by the seller's personnel mechanic. There are some minor issues with the interior that needs to be addressed, so I am looking for any information on how to remove the headliner and the front pillar trims. I am looking forward to some fun drives in the near future!

    Thanks,

    Panda

Congratulations and welcome! She looks beautiful! As far as having the interior bits done, I'm sure there are guys in Seattle who can steer you in the right direction. However, you can always call Craig Nelson at the Jag Shop here in Portland. He owned a 456, and has taken care of my car for the past 6 years, including getting the headliner and rear parcel shelf redone by a contact of his. Great guy.

Love it! Hopefully you will bring it out to E@RCT this year so I can see it in person. I was drooling over the car the past few weeks.... exactly the 456 specs I would want.

Marshall- Very nice and there is a thread here somewhere I remember seeing on removing the headliner. Can probably find it tomorrow. Too late now.

Looks great! I considered a 1995 456GT a while back. The deal fell through, and I ended up with a 550 in the end (more costly of course!).

Extended road trips in these kind of cars are big fun! We did Naples Florida to St. Paul Minnesota when we picked up the DB9 a few years ago. Took 5 days and made it memorable...

Thanks guy for your kind words! Thank you Taz for the headliner repair link and thanks Allen for the Jag Shop information.

The drive home was a challenge. I had been up since 5 am and flown 3 flights that day from Seattle to Oakland, to Seattle and back to Oakland to finish my week. My friend is also a pilot had jumped on my last flight. I had reserved a town car that took an hour and a half to get us to Napa. The Mechanic was there to hand over the car. The car's fuel was nearly empty so we drove it to the gas station to fill it up. We could not get the car to start. The lights would turn on when I turned the key but the starter would not engage. After several attempts, I called the Mechanic for advice. I first thought it was low voltage and I had a weak battery. After trying to unsuccessfully jumpstarting the car the Mechanic called a friend who he referred to as the Professor to come and help. I now realized I did bought another Italian car. The Professor showed up and I turned the battery kill switch off and then back on again and the car started right up. We tested the charging system and everything seemed normal.

We finally left Napa a 7pm and I was glad to have my friend along as co-driver. I did not get home till 8:30 am the next morning and was up for over 27 hours. We tried to take turns to get a nap in the passenger seat with no success. An hour and half into our trip, the car cruised effortlessly in 6th gear at 90mph. I had past a semi truck and then saw an extra set of head lights appear from the side of the road. I had been nailed. I slowed to 80 and waited for the intercept. I pulled way over to the side of the highway onto the gravel and turned on the interior lights and rolled down the windows. I did not want to turn off the car incase it wouldn't start again. The Officer said he pulled me over for speeding and there were no plates on the car. I explained I just bought the car and we were on the way to Seattle. I did put a Washington State 3 day road permit in the rear window and showed him a insurance card for the car. He gave me a ticket for 10 mph over the limit and according to our agreement it was now my friend's turn to drive.

To stay awake I had a 5 hour energy drink around 1 am, then a Monster 4 hours later. I did drink plenty of water. My friend prefers Rockstars. We eat Red Vines and beef jerky. We stopped every couple of hours to fuel and switch drivers.

The mountain pass from California into Oregon was clear, dry and the traffic was very light until we were south of Tacoma. The morning rush hour traffic was very heavy, but we were able to take advantage of the HOV lane. The drizzle started in Medford and turned to heavy as we entering Washington State. Being the car was from California, the previous owner had neglected the windshield wipers. We only received one ticket from the CHP for our efforts and still was a lot of fun to pick up my son from school that afternoon and to see him grinning ear to ear.

The some of the best drives I have ever had have been the first. Learning the car getting to know what's right and what's not. It's an adventure!

    Congrats. Great read.

I agree. That is why one should continually buy new cars. What better justification? ;-)

Contrasts again Marshall, it's always best to road trip it if you can. Get a feel for things.

Hopefully I will be sharing a similar story (without the cops) this spring. :)

All three of my earlier Ferraris were bought at a distance, sight unseen, and then driven 800-1700 miles to get them home. One, the 308 GTS, even involved 4 border crossings and then unknowingly smuggling her into the UK. Great way to learn about your new girlfriend.
