By the way - I am still looking for a dry-sump block or complete engine - if you guys know about such thingy.... All the best Morten
Yes I know, that's a challenge ...actually the only fault I made (so far) was to buy an US-car Anyway, I have had some discussions with Sean about the dry-sump kit and we may have to go that way, however I prefer the original solution ...if possible.
Certainly there is one lying around one of the garages near the Factory??? Classiche of course would be an expensive route to procure one.
I don't think that is the case any longer, there WAS a basket case here that was for sale from a Trailer Park, and when they towed the car backwards the engine cover ripped off, thru the roof.... The pile of engine bits was a really odd mish mash, it was a Euro car VIN but it looked like a wet sump block , to me. When they tore the car up, I lost interest in pursuing the deal..
I had one a few years ago, it (#0785) ended up in MAT's VS Olio-FIAT-livery grp.IV car....at least the short block did. Heads went somewhere else.
After 20 months work and 4000 hours, the 308 GTB group 4 rallycar for the french client is completed and we will continue with my car. Enjoy a few pictures here or have the great pleasure of the entire series of more than 2300 pictures... http://www.mat.fi/n_index.php?nav=gallery_view&gallery=paris308ng&g=13 MO Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Still one of my top 5 threads of all time. Ok maybe best! That car looks incredible Morten! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Morten, If you can't find a dry sump block the wet sump block should be easy to convert/make identical to a dry sump block. I think you can drill the internal passage that feeds the filter housing on the wet sump block to make it like the dry sump. I know the boss for the scavenge discharge is cast on there on many blocks as are the bosses for the dry sump pump mount. The timing cover is the buster ... and FWIW it requires a different stud pattern on the gearbox so I'm not sure a person would really want to use that unless it was absolutely necessary that it be a factory piece. Mine works with the stock gearbox but it is a lot of work!!!! If I didnt care about "looking stock" there is a pretty simple oil pan design that can scavenge the oil with external scavenge pumps and plumb to the factory gear driven pressure section from the tank. Incredible builds you guys are doing there!!! cheers, Sean
Hi Sean, We will continue to try to source original parts, if not succesful, we will manage to do our own solution - but since it's a critical part of the engine, we don't want to do any short cuts yet. MO
Actually, what Sean designed is better. Definitely not a shortcut. I follow the progress of this car weekly! Fantastic stuff
Sorry, it was not meant like that. I have seen pictures of Sean's parts and they look really good indeed. We just prefer to find the original parts before looking at other solutions. MO
The quote above is post #32 in this thread. I hope Jim is still on this board, the car he mentions is chassis# 18847. It was one of 4 Michelotto Gr.B cars. Three of these cars had four valves per cilinder heads (I am avoiding the name QV heads, because I'm not sure if the 4V racing engine heads were based on the QV heads...), and 1 was a 2V car. #18847 was a white car with gold Valentino sponsoring, and carried license plate PD 723098. PD stands for Padova, where Michelotto is based. All 4 Gr.B cars were campaigned by Pro Motor Sport, and this particular car was driven by Luigi 'Lucky' Battistolli and navigator Claudio Berro (big boss at Lotus' racing division nowadays!). It finished 2nd in the '84 Della Lana Rally. It also competed at Monza in 1984 with Waldegaard at the wheel, and Thorsz as navigator. Does anybody know if this car still exists? Last week, on ebay, I was lucky enough to purchase the original Warranty Card and Owner's Service Book for 308GTB #18847, one of 4 Michelotto Gr.B cars. Back to you Morten, keep us posted on your progress! Give my regards to Kari if you see him. Like I mentioned before, he used my old engine in the FIAT Olio VS car he built.

Hi 8valve, Thanks for taking us back in time... I really love the story behind the Michelotto cars and someone should write a book and compile the massive amount of info ...perhaps I should do it... hmmmh... time doesn't allow that currently, perhaps when I retire We will naturally, continue the series of photos on mat.fi when we have more to show, as well as keeping this thread going - finally, I am planning a massive update of my own site rallyferrari.com Stay tuned, focus is 308 GTB rallying MO
I am not aware of the destiny of that one, but expect info can be found... ...in the meantime, 24783 ex-Zanini car is for sale http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C218447 MO
Above is priced "reasonable" since the below pictured went for EUR 460.000 in May this year... The group B cars are not that interesting, despite they only made four, compared to the 11 group IV cars which are sold for up to EUR 715.000 !!!! That was what the ex-Tognana Panasonic car went for a couple of years ago Image Unavailable, Please Login
+1 other than the 4 valve head, most of the goodies of the gr4 cars werent allow without the 200 units need for grB
yes i would be the first inline to purchase a book... i do have an copy of an old michelotto gr4 road test somewhere
