The year was 1978. The Fine Car Store, on Sports Arena Blvd. in San Diego, had my next car and it just brought a lump to my throat when I first saw it. It was the perfect shade of burgundy, with black interior and it was in museum condition. A 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose, (2 cam, torque tube version), with only 11,000 miles. They wanted the astoundingly high price of $22,500 for it, but I paid it anyway because I just HAD to have it. I drove that car every day for two plus years. It was sweet. Finally sold it when I just couldn't afford it any more, but not after I had done everything humanly possible to hold on to it. I remember selling my camera so I could buy tires for the car. But I had a big monthly payment on it ($385/mo was a lot of money to me then... I was a used car salesman at West Coast Imports), and it needed paint and repairs, so there was no alternative but to sell it. And after two years of beating this poor Ferrari with daily driving, sitting outside in the sun and salt air, I got exactly what I had paid for it. Couldn't argue with that!

The photo location is Big Sur, CA. Soon after I bought the car, I took it for a fast ride on California Highway 1/101, a most incredible road for a great road car like this one.

My little brother found this photo in the family archives, just today! I just had to share it with some people who would understand these things.

For more photos and stories about other Ferraris and exotics in my past, see this link:

    Enjoy!

All you guys have been so kind to welcome me to this forum, and complimentary about the photo and the story... I much appreciate it. So you have moved me to share another Ferrari in my life, my 4th Ferrari, another 275 GTB, but this time a 4-cam version, and tell the story behind that one.

Instead of continuing this thread "My Second Ferrari..." look for the photos and story on the post: "My 4th Ferrari, the 275 GTB/4"

    Thanks for reading...

Hi Mike, love the story and the 275, i was an alfa romeo salesman at 'beach imports' newport beach( just up the strret from you!) in 1974 i remember looking in the latest road & track classifieds and seeing a 65 275 gtb short nose listed for sale for $6500 this car was also my dream car and i started saving ( there was also a 250 swb listed $8500) the more i saved the higher the prices went, and eventually i was out of the market, i went over to the local ferrari dealer in newport( 'newport imports) they had a new burgundy with tan daytona interior dino on the show room with a window sticker of $14k + i picked up broshure with a daytona in the center fold i taped on the wall in the bedroom of my beach cottage in newport ( i still have it 34 years later) 9 years ago i bought my first ferrari ( which i still have attachment included) Mike you've done real well and my hats off to you buddy hope to meet you someday ,Chuck

Great period photo. Just to put the price tag into perspective you could have had 5 used corvettes of just about any vintage or engine displacement. But all five together would not have equalled this beauty. PS And I have always been a corvette guy.

Photos like one in the starter post should remind us how Scaglietti cars were finished. Follow the reflection of the white divider stripe in the side of the car, especially around the gills. Follow the reflection of the car's own shadow at the bottom part of the front wing.
