Just a quick update for those following along with my tranny saga. The 86 TR finally came back to life on Monday. After a COMPLETE tear down/rebuild of the tranny and a completed full engine service I was glad to finally see her come to life again. It has been almost 6 months since first gear snapped, and I finally got to take her for a spin Tuesday afternoon .... god that felt good!

I do have a couple of questions ....

    1) I let the car warm up for 10 minutes or so (80f outside) and then took it down the street ... but it was extremely hard to shift 2nd gear ... could this be because of all the new parts? or just did not warm up enough? Every seal, all fluids, a couple of gear sets were changed ... not second ... so this tranny should be like new.

    2) On one of my upshift to 2nd ... it almost felt as though I was shifting into reverse ... I push the clutch back in ... and then just went to third ... seemed ok. Anyone else ever felt this?

after about 10 minutes of driving ... everything seemed to be getting better, but I had to leave her again ... so I am not sure ...

Could be just a "warm-up" thing. It's not uncommon for shifting to be difficult when cold.

I am thinking that the rebuilt tranny may need more time to warm up than the old 45000 mile tranny needed.
I am also thinking I may have a linkage alignment issue ... the shift to second and possibly catching reverse is bothersome. Is there no reverse lock out when moving forward ....

When I did a complete EO including complete upgrade for the trans 1 - 2 gears including oiling etc. and differential change. The first few times shifting was stiff, I even called the trans shop where I got the new gear box from to ask questions. With use my concerns went away and the TR shifts like a hot knife through butter cold or hot any RPM. Congrats on the EO etc. completion.

This is normal for a TR. Let it warm for about 5 min. and drive it. What I do when I first take off is double clutch to 2ed for a few shifts and as the trans warms it gets better.I'am happy to hear your on the road, have fun. Ron

I'd think the gear oil would warm much slower than the engine...little at all if standing still..

As others have said I'm careful for the first few shifts as I start rolling.

Good to hear your progress, we were worried about ya!

Good to hear that you're rollin' again :) !!! Like everyone here is saying, give your newly rebuilt tranny some break-in time (miles), and it should be as good as it was before!!

Fellow F-Chatter NOTOBOY's TR currently has a cracked up first gear, so he'll be going thru what you currently are. I'm hoping he can find a TR 1st gear or a 512 TR tranny soon!!!

I replaced my tranny/diff last year so I feel your pain. But I also envy your feeling of joy now that it's back.

    Tis a good thing !

rskdsk - you likely are going into reverse. It may be as simple as loosening the coupling along the shift rod and rotating it a few degrees. Nonetheless, I would quickly fix it. I had the same thing happening when I first purchased my Boxer 5 years ago...before the major. When downshifting into 2nd the car would stall. Turned out I was going into reverse. Wish they had not put synchos on reverse...at least I could tell what was happening.

It appears that I was shifting the car into reverse ... however they have corrected the aligmnet of the linkage and I should be good to go.
The car is now off to the body shop for the minor bumps and bruises.

As for my first gear ... The shock from the accident actually tore a tooth right of the gear ... I do not know if a weld type tooth could be put on ... so I do not think my old first gear will be any help.

Another couple of weeks and my car should be as good as new.
