won't go into detail here (may have been clarified in a page 3/4 message and don't need to harp on with seemingly racist slur) but the term has been around as far as i'm aware since at least the early 80's.

it had nothing to do with 'boutique' jap cars, but more so any technology wonder from japan that cost less and did a better job than the domestic equivalent. HAM radios come to mind... so of course the derogatory term 'Rice Burner' was applied to any of these items, as there was some sort of lingering feelings for the east.

i have also seen references to motorcycles from the 80's, where the japanese crotch rockets were really the best bang-for-buck. then of course we come to the mid-90's import cars, to which many DO have decent performance, but the fact that the owners make them out to be far better than they could ever be, really deserved a derogatory term, and 'ricer' was easiest.

i'm all for styling in a vehicle, but trying to convince people your car kicks ass by hooking up a 20inch exhaust/wing and stickers on a POS is like putting your grandma in thigh-high boots and a thong. ick.

oh, and that horrible horrible rasp they make at WOT... yuck yuck yuck. take me to the italian symphony anytime.

    this thread is hilarious.

who cares if people rice their cars out? what critics are missing is that ricers don't think of these things as just cars and they don't really think the big ass wing does improve performance. it's part of the culture. go to a public park's bball court and see dudes wearing $150 nikes? do you think they think it makes them play better ball? course not, it's all part of the show, entertainment, just like ricers and their wings and fart cans.

people think we're idiots for spending $200k on a car - so what :)

Negitive as it may be,back in the mid 70s my 750cc 2 stroke Kawasaki triple was also referred to as a ricer or rice burner ,or simply at the time, made in Japan. As to todays rice burner cars. I don't believe to many of us Ferrari owners really care about, or pay any attention to loud Honda Civic type cars with wings,I no I don't!

OH NO! Is my 308 turning into a 'ricer' because I'm adding a trick exhaust, better stereo, new interior, custom water pump, custom AC quick disconnect brackets and the new Moton air adjustable shocks?...YIKES!!!!....Should I just sell it or just add spinners over my gold honneycomb Gotti's and a wing on the deck lid?

Any car, any brand, so long as it's faster than it was. NO POSERS. I have no problem with "ricers" when they do it right.

I guess the term "ricer" is accepted now, but, when I first heard it, it was an ugly reference to Japanese "Rice Burner" cars.

This was the early 70's, when Japanese cars were just getting a toe hold on the US market and it implied underpowered, under-engineered, and un-American.

So, at least for me, when I hear the term, I think it has a nasty racial/ethnic ring and was meant as much to defame the Japanese as their cars.

By the way, I bought a Datsun 280Z shortly thereafter.

There is one aspect of ricers we should embrace:

They are much more likely to be on the same side of traffic enforcement issues as we are than the typical soccer moms and executive cell phoners.

At least the manufacturers are upping the horsepower, and making these cars perform now. I remember in the mid 90's when people were putting the big wings, loud exhaust, and slamming these little 4 bangers to the ground, I was thinking what's the point? They're still slow, and you just wasted 5 grand. I remember when the integra with the vtec engine came out people actually thought they were fast. I killed one on the freeway in an 86 oldsmobile delta 88.

Most of the stuff these days is more functional but the problem is a typical tuner would consider a bodykit/repaint a first priority over a supercharger. Although, that opinion does vary quite a bit.

The Delta 88 vs. the Integra - must have been a base model/automatic. The Type R's are fast, but even faster in the corners. They dominate quite a bit of wheel-to-wheel racing on the track and are quite easy to work on. So... no matter what you think, don't disregard the Integra's potential, even as it is out of the box. Several f-chatters have them. Two that I know of, one daily drives/tracks his car and the other is a dedicated track car.

Well, whether you all recognize it or not, the current generation of "ricers" are going to be the next generation of F-car owners. Not all of them, or most of them, but many of them. Who of us here weren't the ricers of our own generation? I know I was. Since I was 10 years old, I really wanted to someday have a Countach. I loved Ferraris and Lomborghinis. When the 348 came out, I was smitten. Whe the 355 came out, I thought I was going to die of lust. But of course, none of those cars are attainable to a high school student (unless you have wealthy and likely careless parents, of which I had neither). So when I was a teenager I bought a VW Corrado that was left over for 2 years. I modified the air box, exhaust, put an Autothority stage 3 kit in it, and had Fittipaldi wheels. No big wing, etc. but still did some mods. I was always looking for a way to make it faster, better, cooler. I was never into the body kit thing, though. Nevertheless, many older people thought that I was a moron, but my love for performance cars and performance driving was honed in those years.

Many of the F-car owners older than I am worked on muscle cars as teenagers and did all they could to get them how they wanted. They were the "ricers" of their generation.

Today, thanks to some good opportunities, I am able to own just about any production F-car or L-car that I want. I chose a 355. Given the money, would I have taken an M3 or similar German car and modded the crap out of it? No, that's not what I'm into, although I liked doing that stuff as a teenager. Likewise, I don't think that these guys are going to modifying Supras and Civics all their lives.

"Ricers" are as much car nuts as the rest of us. When someone in a WRX STi pulls up next to me at a light, I know that he appreciates looking at my Ferrari more so than the guy in the S-class MB behind me. They're car nuts at heart and when they get older and have real careers with real cash flow, they're going to be like us, with cars like us. And by then the teenagers will be doing something else that we all think is totally retarded and they will be right there with us blasting them on forums like this.

BTW, the only mod that I am doing to the 355 other than what it came with (F50 brakes, Tubi, Tubi air elements) is the Challenge wheels from Speedline. That's the other thing that I learned as a teenager - don't mess with it if it isn't broken.

There is a difference between "Ricers" and "Tuners". Ricers are wannabes that after they install the big ass wings, body kits and huge heavy wheels they end up with a car that’s slower than stock. Tuners will mod there car with performance in mind starting where the biggest gains will be (suspension and engine) and they will usually start with a car that is built for performance i.e. not a Civic EX (there are exceptions). Since living in Japan and coming back to the states I have seen the Japanese tuner culture molested into the Fast and Furious Rice mobiles on the street.

I have an M3 now and I’m currently in search of the maximum N/A performance of the car.

I think this speaks for our society in general. We are so much more about the image than the substance. Body kits on cars is the same as plastic/cosmetic surgery on people. Is it functional? I don't think so. But it makes the person feel better about themselves...for a time. Then the reality sets in that they are still the same person inside. My girlfriend once told me about a statistic where something like 50% of women who had breast augmentation surgery committed suicide. I don't remember the country that this was in but I think it illustrates the problem pretty well.

Any car with whatever mods is a reflection of the values of the owner. With all the speed enforcement these days, you really can't go fast legally on the road. So the next best thing is to look fast. So all the cliches from real race cars get slapped onto anything and everything. Teens want to stand out.

I know I did. But when my buddies were into their muscle cars, I was totally into the Italian exotic cars. And I "modded" my car to emulate the European sports car aesthetic. My buddies laughed but I'd tear them up through a nice curvy road.

Being noticed is what it is all about. Why else would you blast your music at ear-bleeding decibels? I too did this when I was young. Bling-bling wheels are akin to flashy jewelry. Stand out from the crowd.

I'm sure that these "ricer" owners would love to own a Ferrari. But you know what, I'm sure that it wouldn't be long before you see their Ferrari sporting "20"s and a wing. Anything stock is just not an expression of their individuality. They have this need and it goes as deep as their pocket books.
Actually, when you think about the financial implications, alot of these owners spend more on average, based on their available cash, on their "ricer" mods than most Ferrari owners spend on their Fcar.

Is this uncontrolled passion/enthusiasm? Or is it craziness? Whose to say? Like Ryan says, "whatever floats your boat".

The following is a paste of one of two pages of 'Ricer' threads on this forum. Bottom line, these threads get boring. We always say the same things. 'We' own Ferrari's and 'they' own ricers. Both cars are here to stay for a while. Can't we talk about better things, such as who wants to buy my gold honneycomb Gotti wheels?
