please forgive the cheesyness but we are still reasearching for our first fcar and still are not close enough to actual purchase to actually go waste the dealers time. thought maybe some volunteers here maybe could school me a bit. but I got to thinking and digging thru the many threads on other models I had not considered. and then got to pricing them out. here is some of the lines of my thoughts

testarosa, 100k or less 12 cyl, for its time the top of the line, and still right up there with the best.

360 a few years old 100k or slighly more 8 cyl, more common

so a testarosa has to be better performing than a 360 right ?, (I mean feel/handling/speed those are listed in order of importance). it has more class to me I love the look of them. but then again is a testarosa the right move for a first timer, is the 360 more reliable ? do they make a tubi for the testarosa or is that sacrilage even if they do ? if I don't make up my mind soon I am going to have to find a way to buy like 10 f cars because making a decision on just one is killing me.

I really have looked at a lot of threads on the 348/355, and even the 308/328 and I am happy to say I can now identify them all ! cheese graters or no, diving boards or no :), I am still a bit confused on the 308/gt4 they seem to look like tottally different cars. I like the looks of all of them and am pretty sure we will get a 328 at some point as a second fcar but as far as first go I think were sort of decided on the 360 or testarosa 430 looks to be a bit outside of our price range but they seem to be dropping.

as darth vader would say "my thoughts betray me" someone else said on here recently there are almost too many choices in cars im inclined to agree.

Between the two personally I would get a Testarossa just because I don't like power steering, I love grated cheese, and that v-12 sound is dreamy. The 360 would make a better daily driver though.

they are two very different cars. tell us what you'll do with it. do you want to scream around the twisty surface roads? do you need to drive around the city? are you gonna do high speed runs on the highway? are you going to travel long distances?do you like manual steering? I never really thought of the TR as a first ferrari. more like a second ferrari.

I got my first Ferrari just about 1 year ago. It is a 92 512TR with a Tubi. I love it! No regrets so far.

I want to scream around the twisty surface roads (primary use) ,and the occasional track day, I may take it out for a night on the town in the city once in a while say not more than once per month maybe longer . the top speed will be whatever i can get at the track no top speed runs on the street, my top street speed will likely be around 120 on rare occasions , distances not more than 100miles in a day though i may go as far as 350 miles at once to see my parents and show them the car, as long as the steering dosent feel like a late 70's gmc truck I think id be ok with no power steering though im not sure never had a car without it, I currently drive a bmw, and a mercedes and both have steering that is too heaviy assisted, the mercedes being worse than the bmw if that refference helps any.

From what you just said, definitely a 360 and definitely not a TR in my opinion.

I'd think you'd find the 360 more athletic, if you really plan to take it on the track.

In the TR series, I'd probably go for a 512TR over the early Testarossa if only because Ferrari did a serious revamp of the mechanicals and it's probably less likely to have the fabled differential explosion.

I prefer the simpler '80s cars, and the 360's styling leaves me kind of cold, though. If you have the budget for the repairs, I think a 512TR is about the same price as an early 360 at this point, and 360s are still falling. My preference would be 512TR, but I don't track my cars.

Be sure to get black and tan.

if i kept it off the track would that change the advise any , am building a bmw racecar so once i get that going I can probly scratch my track itch with that most of the time. i do like to bring my street cars to the track to really get the feel of them. but maybe id leave the testarosa off . everyone keeps saying great things about the 360 it seems to be the one, though im not crazy about the looks I like the testarosa more, and the 430 both better than the 360. not that I imagine the 360 is too hard to live with lol..

From what you've said, my limited knowledge would point you in the direction of the Modena.

That being said, If it were to be my choice I would pick the TR. Love the looks of the 360, but the TR is in another world IMO.

But, as I'm sure you know, the ultimate decision lies with you. Choose what feels right TO YOU.

Agree my first Fcar was TR as I had desired it since it came out but the diffeerence in the 360 is night and day I still got more people recognising the TR it is timeless in its appeal and shape but I traded mine for my 360 and I loved the TR so that about says it all.

+1. They are completely different in pretty much everything. Since you'll be the one driving them, ignore our advice (except projected maintanence costs maybe) and drive them yourself to see what you like.

If it was me with your budget, I'd get a Boxer...*S*

Brief overview...ive had in this order, 360, Stradale, 512 Tr, back to Stradale!!

After owning all the above i can tell you, if it is a go-kart type feel you are looking for, City driving, unbelievable feel and handling. Between the 2 cars you mentioned. Hands down the 360 (Stradale is absolute winner, if it is in your budget!!)

The TR is a BIG car...that wants to stretch its legs on the open road, I felt it never shined in the city (other than its looks!! were stunning). Where as the 360 gave me the best of both, fabulous city driving with the willingness to go like a bat out of hell on the highway. It shined in the twistys and liked the power band high up in the rev range. The TR was full of torque, but for me, the 360 was more fun!! I loved hearing the 8 screaming at 7k+ RPM

    Good Luck!

wow great posts, now one more question how would one go about driving both ? the 360 shouldnt be a problem I already spoke to augie at ferrari of washington he pretty much told me when im ready come down and see the 360 they pretty much have them in stock. but also how would one get a chance to drive a testarosa ? I'd guess the dealer dosent exactly let people come in and in their eyes possibly "joy ride" in cars like that ie they would be reluctant to let someone like me take a car like that out of the gate. also as not only would I be a first time FoW customer but also a first time fcar buyer. or is the fcar purchase more low key than that ? are they more laid back and helpful than the average dealership? I have called prestige imports too I think they are in the owings mills area I almost never head out that way anyone have any feedback on either dealer ? I have only heard good things on both but have not heard all that much either.

I am a bit confounded because depending on how I have been dressed, and how I have been percieved I have taken alot of flak at many dealerships, the 4 most memorable were a mazda dealer, a subaru dealer, a bmw dealer, and a mercedes dealer, and both the bmw and mercedes situations happened and i own examples of both brands (the people inside didnt see me drive up and had me as some sort of punk i think,) which I still find upsetting that id have to be dressed a certian way or have them see me in the appropriate car just to get treated fairly , as you can seem im pretty much jittery about it all the prospect of actually owning an f car and all things involved with it are wearing on my nerves. if all goes well this summer I hope to be shopping for my f car by winter or spring of 08 we shall see. how does everyone deal with this stress. ok im going to go wimper some in the corner and try to stop getting worked up about it lol.

If you ask about a 360 vs. a Testatrossa and show a knowledge of how different the cars are, I would hope a dealer would take you seriously enough to take some time with you. Be polite, dress so you look like you can afford the car and have patience. If you're serious with them, they should be serious with you. If not, walk out.
