ok, i get a call late sunday after noon from a friend and his brother in law. they both looked at and drove this 911. the car was cheap, had a title, guy wanted it gone! thier wives both said they would kill them if they bought it and added that they should quote "call Mike, he will buy it, he is single".

so i leave work monday and find the teeny tiny shop. it has morgans, old healies, jags, mg's, old fiats, really old alfas... you get the idea. i see the 911, give it the Reaper inspection, i buy the 911. edit :car was delivered today ( tuesday)

i am not going to post pics, :) the car is PURPLE! but the Konig seats and Borbet wheels are kinda cool though.... :)
lots of new stuff, no rust. car runs poorly, its been sitting "a while". guy has put the following so far on the car:

plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel distributer, fuel injectors, oil + filter / change.

    my questions:

i have googled, and i cannot seem to figure out if this is a usa car or not. vin seems to tell me nothing either way. i have a clean title with accurate miles. car has a state inspection sticker ( from the title state, not GA) from several years ago on it, as well as a bunch of military base parking decals. the car has euro side markers on the front fenders that blink with the signals, ect.

is there a way to tell if this is a euro spec 911?
where can i get a set of used Fuchs and a whale tail / trunklid?
the car sits really low and has the wider steel rear wheel flares and deep front airdam with fog lights. added ? original ?
did i mention its ugly purple :)

the car say "911 SC" on the back? no such thing in 77?

i am guessing i will be calling Pelican parts soon :) ( Wayne !)

comments welcome, no purple jokes, the car was CHEAP!

There are some guys in Joisey named the Pateraks that are experts in Porsche. You might see if they can help. I have their number somewhere if you can't find it listed. Also, there's got to be a ton of info, including those books, "Original {name your marque]" which give production details, pics of exterior and interior, etc. for each model. I have a couple books which cover older P cars, but i'm no expert. 993Guy, here, knows quite a bit, i think, he should weigh in too. Oh, there are also some guys in my town that race Ps and build P race cars and seem to know alot about the 911s. They are Rick Demann, Demann Motorsports, in Nyack. If you call him, mention my name. They know me. They might also be a decent source for parts.

The 911 SC was sold in the U.S. from '78 - '83. In Europe, there was a 911 sold during '76 and '77 I believe that is referred to as the "Carrera 3" because of its optional 3.0 Liter engine displacement. Since the SC is also a 3.0 Liter, maybe you have a Euro Carrera 3. The '74 - '77 U.S. cars are all 2.7 Liter cars, btw.

Michael, those early 911s are a hoot to work on and drive, once you figure out how to pull the engine. Moreover, there are tons and tons of vendors and after-market people out there with even more tons of stuff for these cars. Google is your friend.

About the only mistake you can make with a beater Porsche is to restore it. There are so many great cars out there that it ain't worth it to bring one back from the dead.

So go ahead and hot rod the living fuk out of it.

BTW, you'll probably notice that it is even possible to slip a small block V8 in there. Oh, the possibilities.

    Michael,

If sold new in Japan, why the LHD?

Oh, and judging by the 5-blade fan, I'd say it's probably a 2.7 Liter motor.

    Neat car.

It is not a 911SC engine, as it would be engine type 930/xx. Another thing is that the engine has a green shroud, 3.0 SC had orange/red.

That leaves you with a 2.7 liter, or if your lucky, a 76-77 3.0 liter Carrera.

VIN looks to be a 1977 ROW (rest of world) 911.

I like it. Color & all.

One of my favorite bodystyles.. it looks like the original color was red (judging from the trunk). I'm suprised that you don't have the interior out of that sucker already, it would've lasted 0.2 secs in my garage. :)

Keep us updated on the progress, it looks like a perfect platform for a track whore.

Wax, MichaelB, thanks for the info. the car may be a "bitsa" i think the engine is out of a newer ( than 77) 911 . i cant find the "911/81" engine type number that is on the engine block for type. i would love for it to be a Carrera 3.0. are there any other places to look for numbers or clues. i know the 5 blade 5 and green shroud are CIS 76-77. new fuel dizzy is about 2k, somebody must have rebuilt ones. the door panels and shifter boot can be dyed black. i will sell off the seats and wheels as soon as i find replacements. the car will be a Porsche club weekend warrior. there are lots of new lines and bits under the car, Bilstien shocks, the brakes are huge ect. i have no clue how it drives as i wont start it until i fix the fuel issue and change the oil / filters again. purple / pink, either way i am screwed with the color.good thing i know the right folks here to get it painted.

if anyone knows a way to tell a 2.7 from a 3.0 let me know. i am 99% sure with help from JFRAZAR that the engine is coming out to do everything right, the first time. the Ferrari is not happy........ wait till i get the Lotus Turbo i have my eyes on....... :)

You may want to call me. I honestly know more about 911s than I ever intended too, but thats just life when you have owned many!

It would appear the car has late 2.7L CIS engine. DO NOT spend money on repairs or such on this engine! Buying a new fuel dizzy or such.... waste of money. The late CIS 2.7 engines were THE worst ever put in a 911. They tend to run hot (that 5 blade fan plus emissions crap they came with compounded the problem). They also have a magnesium engine case. The head studs pull out of these cases. Odds are, unless the engine has received a very comprehensive and correct rebuild (with extensive case modifications...) it will have pulled head studs.

You can rebuild it and end up with a really great engine. If you want to rebuild that engine, you could convert it to being a 2.8L twin plug beast and us a set of 50mm PMO carbs. Such engines can give over 300hp at 8,000 rpm but expect to spend in the $12K range assuming you build it yourself.

If its going to be a fun hotrod street car, a better solution is to just buy a used 3.2 Carrera engine and put that in. They can be had for $4K-$5K and are very reliable engines. With some induction tweaking and SSI exhaust it will give about 240hp. Plenty in a very light car.

The sky really is the limit with a car like yours! The first thing you must decide is what do you want to do with it? Street car? Autocross? Track days? A street legal track hotrod? Race it? 911s make fantastic race cars you know....

I agree with Terry here. I've had a bunch of 911's myself (5 actually) and we've obviously read a lot of the same material. I've heard all of the same problems with the later 2.7 cars. The 3.2 engine is a gem. That might be the move.
