A few months back, my wife and I decided to book a 5-night vacation to Cancun, Mexico. We are set to leave this Thursday (Feb. 14th).

Yesterday, my wife learns that Chrysler is rumored to be laying off 900 engineers this Friday. How lovely. Here we go again!

Not going to be much of a vacation - my wife will think about nothing other than whether she will be returning to a job or not, as will I. I'd probably cancel the trip if I could. This blows in the worst of ways.

It is either going or not going to happen regardless. Go and enjoy yourself; it could all be for nothing.

If your wife is an Engineer, she has an education and practical experience that are very portable. Engineers are in-demand everywhere.

What the hell, go have fun. Last time that happened at my place I told them to be damn sure they called me on St. John if I got laid off, 'cause I'd have stayed for an extra couple of weeks :)

Big problem is we've been through this before.

If you remember, very shortly after Daimler bought Chrysler a number of years back, they laid off about 5,000 people on a Friday. My wife was one of those 5,000 people. She immediately got back in the job hunt and got a job through a design house, who actually placed her back at Chrysler. She was determined to get hired back as a direct employee. After a few years, it finally happened. And now we are faced with a layoff once again.

Yes, engineers are in demand everywhere, everywhere, that is, except Michigan, where there is a huge surplus of them because of the big 3 laying so many off. The part that sucks is that you try to plan things out, both short term, and long term, yet it becomes very difficult and very stressful when you never know if you or your spouse will have a job tomorrow. The job market is bad in the USA right now, but especially bad in Michigan.

I know we have absolutely no control over what will happen, but that doesn't mean that we can block it out of our heads. If she does lose her job, and cannot find another shortly, we can be headed for some serious trouble. We have a house with a mortgage that relies on 2 incomes. I do not want to be faced with having to sell our house, and taking a huge bath on it because of market conditions.

I guess the answer will have to be; tequila............and plenty of it!

I have been through it and it sucks. But on the bright side, your wife may have a head start finding something before the rest of Chrysler's people are let go.

She might find that she enjoys a small company much more. Times have changed and she may actually have more security working for one.

As for Michigan, I'm not sure it will ever be what it once was, manufacturing-wise.

I've been "outplaced" a couple of times, it has always worked out better than the job I had before.

The lesson I learned the first time was to not be over-financed. That 2-income mortgage would never fit my comfort level.

I built a large shop attached to my house and am wrenching on Italian toys now.

Spend the vacation considering your options (there are a lot of them) but don't forget to have fun.

Well, when I meant 'portable', I meant on a national scale...I've had to move from PA to MD to SC to MA in 12 years....that's the 'new American Economy'....you move to where the jobs are, and they do move around. Lose a job, find another - maybe its in the state you're in, maybe its in another state. That's life. You really can't put-down roots anywhere unless you have your own business and work for yourself. Look on the bright side...you have a wife who loves you. Screw worrying about the 'stuff'.

My heart goes out to you.

It is awful when you worry about problems over which you have no control.

    Good luck with it.

There lies an issue..........I have a job that I enjoy very much, and earn a good living at, which I don't think I can find elsewhere. So what to do in a situation like that? Also, selling a house in a Michigan economy is a losing proposition.

Losing a parent or child while on vacation is a completely ruined vacation. You've got your health and someone with exprience as an engineer will never starve. A matter of perspective. Enjoy your vacation.

Here is to shed some light on the situation.

Think of the worst case situation. I know that there probably is alot of "ins" and "outs" that I and the rest of the board are unaware of, but truely, what is the worst that can happen? Will you lose your wife? will you die? No. I hope that this doesn't come across as cocky or arrogant, but really though, as long as you have eachother ( your wife and yourself ) im sure that you two can work through anything, just as im sure you have in the past. You seem like a strong willed gentleman that really can work through anything. Mone and bills will still come, i know, BUT, maybe the solution to the problem really is going on a vacation to relax those nerves. Have a drink or two and just enjoy what you have. There is SOOOO many more people in worse situations than yourself ( again not to sound mean ). You have the support of the rest of your family and I know that you will figure it out, whatever it may be. So keep your head up and what i like to say " JUST GIVE 'ER "

Staying positive is the best way to get around these types of situations. Stressing yourself is the worst thing to do. Get a pad or paper and sit down with the 'Mam, and get a plan.
Next, have fun in Mexico. I hope you have a great trip!!!

I hope your worry is for nothing, and she is able to keep her job. If not, you might want to be pro-active with your mortgage company, and let them know you may have issues in the near future, and are they willing to work with you on payments. With the chaos in the housing/mortgage business, I'm sure they don't want another house to sell to themselves at a foreclosure sale, and would want to work with you to keep some money coming in. Best of luck, just don't drink the water in Mexico.

Having your wife get killed while in Mexico would be a "completely ruined vacation". A layoff before you leave is nothing. If your wife is going to worry about it and constantly talk about it the whole time, maybe you should not go. Sound like she's the one that going to ruin your vacation.

    Wow, pretty harsh post there.

Yeah, comparing a layoff to a death certainly makes a layoff seem like nothing - however making that comparison is a little ridiculous, don't you think? Reality will be what it will be, and we'll have to deal with whatever that may be. Anyone who is in a position to just dust off their spouse getting laid off is indeed in a great position. I am not someone in that position. The consequences of a long term layoff would be difficult, there's no getting around that. We can probably make due for a few months, but after that, some drastic changes would have to ensue, changes that would change our lifestyle completely. If we got to the point where we would have to sell our house - that is very dramatic to me.

The fact that the decision of who gets laid off will occur while we are away..............how can someone not think about that if that second income is counted on? If I could cancel the vacation, or delay it, I would.

Thanks for the well wishes from all of you who extended them.

Yes it is, but the housing market is bad almost all over the country so you will get a great deal on the next house you buy if you have to do that. In the end it will be a wash (or close to it). Good luck to you and your wife.
