Ok, I admit, it's a blatant "neo-retro" copy of the 1958 classic. The sketch is rough, the mags also look bad (I wanted to make a modern interpratation of Borranis in an alloy wheel) and there is no shading work...

But I think Ferrari have lost the sensual lines that made them so special... I vote that they return to their old sexy shapes!!!

More to come if you like this 1st sketch...

Really really beautiful. They should have made your design, not that piece of crap they call a Ferrari.

Your sketching is so smooth with the lines. It looks just right and seems more of a compliment to the earlier. Very well done, I like it a lot.

Overall I like it. A bit of the Panoz Esperante from the windshield back, and I'm not sold on the rims, but they're creative and different in a world of nothing but 5-spoke rims.

Is it retro? Yeah, sure. But that's because it works...

I think it looks a lot like the Jaguar F-type concept from a few years ago.

Very nice. The retro ties it well to the model's heritage. With few minor changes it could be brought in to 2008 land.

I really like the design of your sketch but people saying that the current california doesnt look like a Ferrari, this sketch is "worse". No offense! The second design looks better and more Ferrari-ish.

I think the problem with Ferrari (and so many other manufacturers now) is that there seems to be a vacuum of creativity in design anymore. Ferrari's new California is a perfect example. They decided to rob the bank of their past and produce yet another model that is supposed to invoke some kind of passion from the old days. The result is a modern interpretation of an old car, which doesn't work, IMO, because it is neither the old California nor truly beautiful. Back when the original California was created, it was done so to serve a purpose (provide sexy, exclusive transportation for West Coast Hollywood types who wanted to stand apart from the crowd), and it was done with forward vision. The designers didn't say "Hey, that '29 Duesenberg was a pretty car that opitimised wealth and style in the Roaring 20's. Let's use style elements from that for our new sports car!" Obviously Ferrari was too young at the time to pull anything from their own past cars, but I don't think they would have done it even if they had cars to do it from. Why can't car companies stop borrowing from their past and just make cars that are pretty and up to date for right now???

IMHO, borrowing elements from the past does not make designers less creative. It gives a continuity in the designs of the cars and speak to the "emotive" side of the customers... Also, if you look at the model designs from Ferrari, they were always evolutionnary (the 250 series from the TDF to the 275 GTB), with, at some times, some revolutions (the Daytona, the testarossa, the Enzo)... I think you can look in the future with you feet firmly planted in the past... But for sure, it's a balancing at and a fine one at that since Ferrari stirs so much passion...

By the way the original California spider is just a 250 TDF without the roof... It just happens that the lines are so beautiful... The GTO and P4 were not created with beauty in mind but with aerodynamics... Those were cars that were not designed...

I think evolution is essential. I'm just sick of every manufacturer coming out with a new car that is a retro version of an old one. The 250 to the 275 to the Daytona is a logical progression. Ford's new Mustang, or Dodge making a modern copy of a 1970 car, for example, is odd. It seems cool at first but where do they go from there? Are they going to make a 2020 version of the Dodge Daytona from the 80's?
