Hope this isn't too poorly written.

It's hard to describe the 911 Turbo. I have driven many cars but not many of the ones that could compare to this. I have read several reviews of other cars and comparisons to this car. So I won't compare really but my feelings of the car seem to be on par with most others.

The car is fast, hands down. It tracks so stable and straight it's incredible. I love S2000 as you have probably seen and it gets nervous at the limits of adhesion. The Turbo just grips grips and grips!!! At higher speeds it felt pretty relaxed. Even oversteer brought on by the hoards of power is controllable yet does require a lot of attention to control the car, but never a scary moment. Around corners you never really feel the AWD helping you. This is a good thing because the car just flattens and pulls you around the turn like you were tired to a motorized merry go round. It feels a little heavy although you don't get hardly any understeer. Not like CLK 55 AMG heavy, but a little heavy obviously compared to the S2000, which is one finger light. Steering is tight though and well weighted. Not as sharp as the S2000's steering but that's part of the cars charm. It's Jekyll and Hyde, gentleman and beast character is evident as soon as you start to drive away the first time. I love this car.

There is a large rush of power from this car. The "turbo lack" is minimal but overall power delivery is smooth just fast. There is plenty of power down low but not all of it. Listen and you can hear the turbos doing the job. Around town you just enjoy the comfortable drive. Then there is the on ramp. Hold on and then suddenly you're doing 120mph and going oops. I couldn't imagine driving a X50 package with an Intake, exhaust, and a chip. 550hp compared to the 420hp I drove is mind boggling! And I have driven my friend's 11 second MR2! I have read about almost all the sports cars in the price market.

I am going to own one of these one day. I will get my S2000 soon, and then will skip on the M3 and continue to save right on past the newest of NA 911s (although by then a preowned 2005 Carrera S 3.8 will look very tempting.) to a preowned 911 Turbo with X50 package. Although that is going to be standard on 2005s. Then we'll work on the Ferrari.

    Great write-up.
Except for "turbo lag" and the X50 is a conservatively rated 450hp (vs 420 for stock). :)

Jekyll and Hide seems to be this car. Quite amazing piece of automobile. I'm not fond of the looks stock ... but add some TechArt rims along with a RUF nose and GT2 wing, and it's damn close to everyday perfection.

Nice review. But I am disappointed in your choice of parking spot - why use the handicapped spot?

I personally like the wing on the 911tt more than the GT2, but thats my opinion. Thats a great writeup for a great car. The car just has massive accleration from what i hear, just seems endless. However ive heard and read from many sources that it is unstable at speeds over 130mph, but then again what car is stable at 130mph, besides a Ferrari of course.

As the owner of a very heavily moded 01 tt I can tell you this much, if there is one thing I do not like about the 996's is the steering. It is way to light and does not offer the driver feedback that even my Maserati coupe does let alone a 360. It is a great car, but in stock form very boring, though I guess what I had done might be called by many as crazy. It was my daily drive for a long time till I bought the Maserati. I am hoping on the 997 Porsche get the steering right this time.

my sentiments exactly. it's a great overall car, esp for daily driving but is a bit of a snoozer - it's just too refined. i had an '03TT and while it's fun b/c it's so damn fast, there's very little that excites me about it. i never had the urge to just "go for a spin" in the TT which is all i wanted to do w/ the 355 and 360.

unfortunately, i don't think the 997 will get you where you want to go, rather, it's headed the other direction...

I feel the same way! The 911 Turbo is stupendously fast, but not anywhere near as enjoyable a car as the Maserati Coupe.

I compared the 2 cars, and picked the Maserati

    Great write up.

Carnut, I agree..........just got out of a 964 and then swapped to a 996 when I was moving cars around yesterday and what a difference.....the 964 is so wired in and the other car is light comparatively speaking.

If you ever get up near Philly, I take you for a ride, over 650hp 1.3 on the boost gauge instantly. It will snap your head back like a drag racer. You just have to make sure it's pointed in the right direction before you slam the pedal down.

Thank you, that is very generous of you Carnut! I will definitely remember that if I ever travel your way! With the incredible cars you show to own, your opinion seems to be one I can certainly trust.

Ummmm... I have some great videos you need to watch. Controllable oversteer is very possible and quite fun. ;)

Nice review. I will have to drive one and really see for myself. I am at the stage in my life were power and speed hold most of my interest in car. I do absolutely agree with the interior of the Turbo though. It is good, but disappointing for a $120K-$150K car. I will do my best now to try to drive the Maser, and I'll post my thoughts on that too.

Oh that was just to show my friend’s brother the car. He worked at Pizza Hut and we actually delivered pizzas in it for a while. (Oh the look on peoples faces!! Lets just say he didn't get much in tips) But we didn't take up the spot for very long, I promise.
    Thanks for the comments.

Carnut, I might have to take you up on that offer, if it's directed at others besides Steven.. What mods do you have on the TT? I've had my eye on an X50 for awhile now, but started thinking that aftermarket alternatives might make more sense from a financial point of view.

Cartman, No it does not make sense from a financial point of view, I was close to 30K in that car incliding stereo and radar. GT2 turbos, exhaust, coilovers, new ecu's and a unichip piggyback chip programed to hit full boost. With all the cars I've had this one is the one my wife hates. I'd by either an 01 or an 02 without X50, call the guys at AWE and they can chip the car cost you less that 4k and you will get another 70hp or so. The X50 does not seem to matter much a wholesale so you might be able to find one pretty cheap. Turbo's in good shape can be found in the low 80's. I learned to hard way, I've lost tens of thousands moded cars, I will never do it again.
